Volleyball Takes Down UT Martin 3-1

The Redhawks are now 6-1 at home this season.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri volleyball team hit over .400 in the first two sets on their way to a 3-1 (25-14,25-11,20-25,25-23) win over UT Martin Saturday afternoon at Houck Fieldhouse in the final game of the Dig for Life campaign this season. The Redhawks are now 11-15 overall and 9 -6 in the OVC. Southeast is also 6-1 at home this season after the victory.

"We responded very well to our loss on Tuesday, we worked on mental toughness this week and it showed on the court when we found ourselves in tight situations," said head coach Julie Foliard

The Redhawks were on fire in the opening frame hitting .452 with 16 kills as the Redhawks took the opening set 25-14. Southeast scored the final six points of the set as the Skyhawks would commit five errors in the final six points.

Southeast continued to put pressure on the Skyhawks in the second set as the Redhawks hit .429 in the frame and held UT Martin to a .000 hitting percentage as Southeast took the second set 25-11.

The Redhawks opened the second frame with a 7-2 lead. Southeast would later use a six point run to jump out to a 13-4 advantage as the Redhawks would continue to cruise in the frame as they jumped out to a 2-0 match lead.

The Skyhawks took the third frame 25-20. The Redhawks had the tables turned on them as Southeast only hit .067 in the frame. UT Martin used a seven point run in the frame to take a 16-7 advantage. The Redhawks used a five point run in the later stages of the set, but it was not enough as the Redhawks dropped the set.

Southeast recovered and took the fourth set 25-23. Southeast jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the opening of the frame. The Skyhawks battled back late using a four-point run to tie the match at 18-18.

The set then became a back and forth affair until an error by the Skyhawks gave the Redhawks game point. Sophomore Colleen Yarber, who led the Redhawks with 17 kills scored the game winning point as Southeast took the match 3-1.

The Redhawks hit .269 on the afternoon, their second highest hitting percentage of the season. UT Martin finished the match with a .145 hitting percentage.

Yarber lead the Redhawks with a game-high 17 kills. She also added 13 digs and two blocking assists. Sophomore middle blocker Emily Coon added 10 kills for the Redhawks to go along with five blocks.

Senior Paige Dossey added 13 digs for Southeast and a season-high four blocks to pace the Redhawks defensively.
Sophomore Berkley Idel added a team-high 22 digs. Setter Julie Shives had a big day with 41 assists and eight digs.

The Skyhawks were led by Emily Keaton, who had 14 kills on the afternoon. Libero Kasey Elswick recorded a game-high 26 digs.

The Redhawks will be in action next Friday evening as Southeast heads to Morehead State to take on the Eagles at 6 p.m., CT.
