Yarber Continues Hot Streak as Redhawks Down Tennessee Tech, 3-1

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Southeast Missouri volleyball team defeated Tennessee Tech 3-1 (25-13,19-25,25-23,25-22) in Cookeville, Tenn. Friday evening. The Redhawks were led by sophomore Colleen Yarber, who recorded a game-high 16 kills.
 
“Yarber did a great job, she was smart as she had to take the big block and she was overall just very aggressive,” said head coach Julie Folliard.
 
The Redhawks (10-13, 8-4 OVC) jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the opening frame. The early run was paced by sophomore Emily Coon, who had two kills as she continued her aggressive play in OVC contest.
 
The Redhawks jumped out to a 17-8 lead as Southeast continued to swing aggressive in the frame. Southeast finished the set with a .393 attack percentage as the Redhawks took the opening frame 25-13.
 
Southeast jumped out to a 6-2 edge in the second frame. The Golden Eagles (3-20, 2-11 OVC) cut the Redhawks lead to as little as 8-7. The Golden Eagles would manage to tie the match at 11-11.
 
Tennessee Tech took their first lead of the match at 16-15. TTU managed to continue their momentum and take a 22-18 advantage late in the second frame. The Golden Eagles held off the Redhawks late to take the set 25-19 as Southeast hit only .132 in the frame.
 
The two teams battled in the opening stages of the third set. Neither team could find a grove offensively though as each team recorded five errors early. The Redhawks managed to earn some separation as Southeast jumped out to a 17-13 lead.
 
The Redhawks would continue their offensive stretch and take a 20-14 lead. TTU would make a run cutting the Redhawks lead to 24-23, but Tennessee Tech could not overcome their errors as the Redhawks took the third frame.
 
The Redhawks overcame a 5-1 deficit in the early stages of the fourth set to tie the set at 5-5. The Redhawks and Golden Eagles would then engage in a seesaw battle with TTU taking the upper hand until the Redhawks took a 17-16 lead.
 
Southeast the Redhawks would remain strong and hold off the Golden Eagles late as Southeast to the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
 
The Redhawks were led by Yarber who continued her roll as the sophomore recorded 16 kills on the night hitting at a .196 clip. Sophomore Berkley Idel continued to shine defensively as she recorded a career-high 28 digs.
 
“Berkley dig a great job passing, she was digging their outsides, she did a great job backing up our blocks,” said Folliard.
 
Setter Julie Shives was solid once again with 35 assists to go along with 12 digs and seven kills. Coon hit a game-high .368 in the match as she added nine kills for the Redhawks.
 
Southeast will be in action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m., CT. as the Redhawks head to Jacksonville Ala. to take on Jacksonville State.
