CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Lauren Bozesky's seventh goal of the season sent the Southeast Missouri State soccer team into overtime, but UT Martin netted the winning tally with 3:16 left to defeat the Redhawks, 2-1, at Houck Stadium on Friday night.
The loss evens Southeast's (10-5-1) season series with UT Martin (9-6-2) at one apiece, with Friday's setback coming a week after the Redhawks downed the Skyhawks by an identical 2-1 margin in a conference tilt on the road.
The Redhawks doubled the Skyhawks in shots (6-3) in the first half, but it appeared the match would remain scoreless going into halftime. However, UT Martin's Lucy Pater tallied her first goal of the year by heading home a corner kick feed from Hannah McGowen in the 43rd minute to send Southeast to the locker room down by a 1-0 score.
UT Martin created some quality chances early in the second half, but the Skyhawks were unable to gain any more separation on the scoreboard. The Skyhawks owned an 8-6 advantage in shot attempts in the final regulation frame, but this time it was the Redhawks who responded with a late goal.
With less than four minutes remaining, Bozesky corralled a through ball from
Ali Bauer just inside the 18-yard box and blasted a shot off the post and in for her seventh goal of the year, sending the contest into overtime.
The Skyhawks outshot the Redhawks, 2-1, in the first overtime period with each team creating one corner kick opportunity. However, none of the attempts were on goal and the match entered a second overtime frame.
Southeast appeared to weather the storm from UT Martin midway through the overtime frame as the Redhawks held the Skyhawks scoreless on three consecutive corner kicks.
The match was finally decided in the 107th minute on a broken play. A Kendyl Wilson crossing feed was redirected out of the 18-yard box by a Redhawk defender, but the ball found Midori Sera, who blasted a shot into the goal from about 18 yards out to send Southeast to its second consecutive loss.
“This was a good soccer match tonight,” Southeast head coach
Heather Nelson said. “I thought both teams matched up very well. This was the type of game we need to stay sharp going into the final weekend of conference play. We were able to give a lot of players extended minutes. The result was unfortunate, but I felt we played pretty well.”
UT Martin held a slim, 15-14, advantage in shot attempts and finished up with an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
Jessica Grindstaff made her first start of the season in goal for the Redhawks and made one save in the first half. She gave way to
Abby Jordan, who stopped four of the five shots she faced after the break.
The Redhawks have two more regular season matches remaining and are back in action on Oct. 28 when they host Jacksonville State at Houck Stadium.
