Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Morehead State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. -  Southeast Missouri dropped a hard fought 3-1 decision against Morehead State Saturday afternoon at Houck Fieldhouse. Scores of the match were 20-25, 30-28, 28-30, 16-25 as the Eagles snapped the Redhawks five game winning streak at home.

“They are a very tough team, we just need to get a better effort all around offensively, but defensively we were very aggressive against a very good offensive team,” said head coach Julie Folliard.

The Eagles took the first set 25-20. The first frame was a very closely contested set until the Eagles scored the final three points of the frame. The Redhawks made five errors in the set with only nine kills compared to 15 kills for the Eagles.

The Redhawks came back and took the second set 30-28. The second set featured the Redhawks pounding 19 kills in the frame, hitting a game-high .277.

Southeast was down 17-10 in the second set, but the Redhawks used a six-point run to cut the lead to 17-15. The Redhawks battled back and tied the match at 24-24 after being down 24-21. Southeast had a chance to take the set early, but had to wait for an Emily Coon kill as the Redhawks took the frame 30-28.

The third set featured the same score as the second, but a different outcome as the Eagles took the set 30-28. Morehead State had a game-high 22 kills in the set, hitting a game-high .319.

The Eagles took the fourth set 25-16 and the match 3-1. Morehead State used a seven point run in the frame on their way to the win.

The Redhawks had only 52 kills on the night compared to 73 for MSU. The Eagles outhit the Redhawks .249 to .188 in the match.

Southeast was led by sophomore Emily Coon who had a career-high 16 kills, hitting .400 on the afternoon. Coon also added seven blocks in the match as the OVC leader in blocks in conference matches continues her solid play.

Sophomore Colleen Yarber added 14 kills for the Redhawks. Sophomore Berkley Idel was solid defensively with a career-high 24 digs. Setter Julie Shives dished out 39 assists and added nine kills and eight digs.

Southeast will be in action next Friday evening at 7 p.m., CT. as the Redhawks travel to Tennessee Tech to take on the Golden Eagles.
