CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. - Sophomore
Colleen Yarber had a career-high 18 kills in the Redhawks 3-1 (13-25,25-21,26-24,25-20) win over Eastern Kentucky (11-10, 6-4 OVC) Friday evening at Houck Fieldhouse. The Redhawks (9-12, 7-3 OVC) are now 5-0 at home this season.
“It was a big win for us tonight, it proves that we are an upper tier team in the OVC and we will go out there and battle every night,” said head coach Julie Folliard.
The Colonels took the first set 25-13. EKU jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. They continued to put pressure on the Redhawks as they hit .556 in the frame with 17 kills and only two errors. The Redhawks struggled hitting only .061 in the set with seven errors.
The Redhawks recovered from the first frame and took the second set 25-21. Southeast hit .353 with 15 kills. Yarber had a terrific frame with five kills coming off the Southeast bench.
“We made some lineup changes and it really sparked us,” said Folliard.
The Colonels jumped out to an early lead again, but the Redhawks contained their advantage early in the second frame. Southeast used a five-point run in the set to take control at 10-8. The two teams would battle as the game was tied at 21-21, but the Redhawks used a five point-run once again to take the set.
The third set was a hard fought battle as each team made runs to take the set, but the Redhawks prevailed taking the third frame 26-24. Southeast enjoyed a 16-11 lead halfway through the frame, but the Colonels battled back and tied the set at 20-20.
The two teams battled from there, but the Redhawks used a kill from
Brittney Kalinoski and an attacking error by EKU to take the set. Each team hit over .300 in the frame with the Redhawks pounding 21 kills in the set.
The fourth set saw the Redhawks produce only 10 kills, but Southeast forced 12 errors by the Colonels to take the set 25-20. The Redhawks used a seven-point run to break an early tie and take a 13-7 advantage.
Southeast would continue their hard play in the fourth set until EKU made a six-point run of their own. The run proved to be too little too late as Southeast took the set and the match 3-1.
Southeast hit .252 on the night with 55 kills. The Redhawks registered six blocks on the night. The Colonels hit .244 with 60 kills and four blocks.
Yarber had career night with 18 kills. She also hit a career-high .417 in the match. Yarber also added 12 digs. Sophomore
Emily Coon was solid in the middle once again with 10 kills and five blocks on the night.
“Colleen plays with such energy it is really contagious, she has such a powerful arm swing as well and it gives opponents fits as she was aggressive putting that ball down the line,” said Folliard.
Junior
Brittney Kalinoski added 13 kills for Southeast. Sophomore
Berkley Idel returned to the libero position for the first time since the season opener and added a team-high 19 digs. Setter
Julie Shives dished out 42 set assists and added 10 digs.
“Berkley had a great week of practice and she made some really quality digs for us tonight,” Folliard said.
EKU was led by Ashley Edmond who had a match-high 22 kills on the night. Hannah Burkle added 19 for the Colonels.
The Redhawks will be in action tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m., CT. at Houck Fieldhouse against OVC leader Morehead State.
