Miles Smith of Southeast Missouri State became a three-time All-American, but came up short in his bid to win the national championship in the NCAA Indoor 400-meters.

He was third behind eventual champion Andretti Bain of Oral Roberts and Jordan Bose of Washington down the stretch but was overtaken at the finish by Calvin Smith of Florida.
Smith's time of 46.46 placed him sixth overall with Joel Phillip of Arizona State finishing second overall after timing 46.27 in the first section. Boase was third at 46.34 followed by Bobby McCoy of Arizona at 46.36, Calvin Smith of Florida at 46.44 and Miles Smith at 46.46. Lukas Hulett of Nebraska was seventh.
Bain's winning time was 46.19.
