Redhawks Drop 76-71 Heartbreaker to Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri (7-10, 1-3) erased an 11-point deficit with the help of eight second-half 3-pointers, but came up short during the final seconds of a 76-71 loss to Austin Peay (9-7, 4-0) Saturday.

SEMO was down, 51-40, with 12:46 remaining in the second half when it used a 13-2 run fueled by a couple 3-pointers from freshman Ledarrius Brewer. Brewer's second trey tied the game at 53-53 with a little over 10 minutes left.

Jonathan Dalton later nailed a 3-pointer to grab SEMO a 62-61 edge with 5:36 on the clock, its first lead since the 12:05 mark of the first half. After that, neither team led by more than four until the final seconds.

The Redhawks were down, 72-71, once Denzel Mahoney buried his fourth 3-pointer of the contest with 1:19 to go. SEMO had a chance to take the lead after rebounding a missed jumper by Chris Porter-Bunton, but turned the ball over when Daniel Simmons lost the ball out of bounds along the baseline.

On APSU's ensuing possession, the Governors missed two jumpers. However, Averyl Ugba and Terry Taylor were there to rebound those misses. Taylor was fouled and made two free throws to push the Governors lead to 74-71 with five seconds left.

With an opportunity to tie the game on a 3-pointer, SEMO in-bounded the ball to Dalton. Dalton started dribbling up the far sideline and lost the ball out of bounds. Terry was fouled again shortly after that and added two more free throws to ice the game.

The Redhawks were a red-hot 8-of-12 for a 66.7 percent clip from beyond the arc in the game's final 20 minutes.

SEMO started strong out of the gate scoring the first eight points of the game as APSU went scoreless for nearly five minutes.

Brewer sank a 3-pointer for the first points and Mahoney converted a 3-point play after he was fouled making a layup. Mark Laros' layup off a nice pass from Dalton gave the Redhawks an early 8-0 cushion with 15:16 to go in the first half.

Following a layup by Simmons that put SEMO ahead, 14-9, the Governors responded with a 14-0 run in the next 4:27. Ugba tied the game on a layup and Dayton Gumm scored the go-ahead basket as APSU took a 23-14 advantage with eight minutes left.

A 3-pointer by Taylor widened the Governors lead to double figures (30-19) and APSU went on to build a 36-27 advantage at the intermission.

Taylor finished with a double-double 29 points and 14 rebounds to lead APSU. He also made 9-of-11 free throws and grabbed nine offensive boards. Ugba and Porter-Bunton followed with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Governors overpowered the Redhawks with a +21 margin (44-23) on the glass. APSU gathered 22 offensive rebounds and scored 24 points on second chance opportunities.

Mahoney paved the way for SEMO with 24 points and six rebounds. He went 7-of-11 from the field, 4-of-6 from 3-point range and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Mahoney did not miss a free throw in the Redhawks first two Ohio Valley Conference road games going 14-of-14. Additionally, the 20-point effort marked his team-high seventh of the season.

Brewer, too, knocked down four 3-pointers en route to scoring 18 points for the night. Simmons chipped in 11 points, while Dalton dished out a game-high nine assists.

SEMO fell to its 10th loss of the season and sixth in its last seven games.

The Redhawks return home to host Morehead State on Jan. 11. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., CT, at the Show Me Center.
