LaToya Howell joins the Southeast Missouri women's basketball program for her first year as an assistant coach.
Howell, who spent the previous two seasons at Texas-Pan American, will primarily coach the Redhawks’ perimeter players. She will also be involved in recruiting.
During her two seasons at UTPA, Howell coached the Broncs’ post players and put together the team’s practice plans. She was also heavily involved in recruiting efforts. Her efforts helped land forward Cassandra Moody a spot on the All-Great West Conference first team in 2012-13. Her tutelage of Joyea Marshall also paid dividends with Marshall earning GWC Newcomer of the Year and second-team All-GWC honors.
Prior to joining the Broncs, Howell served two years as an assistant coach at Loyola University Chicago. She helped the Ramblers post a 15-15 record during her first season (2009-10), which was their first .500 season since 2001-02. She worked primarily with Loyola’s post players.
Howell spent the first three years of her coaching career as an assistant at Texas A&M-Commerce, where she worked with the perimeter players. The Lions posted a 65-29 overall record during her stint. In her first season on the staff, Texas A&M-Commerce went 28-8, won the Lone Star Conference North Division title with a 10-2 league record and captured its first LSC Tournament title in school history.
Before moving into coaching, Howell was a standout for both the Air Force Academy and Nebraska. She lettered in each of her two seasons at Air Force, earning All-Mountain West Conference honorable mention as a freshman in 2001-02. That season, Howell set a Division I school record with 90 steals and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. During her sophomore season, she averaged 17.4 points and 7.0 assists per game. On Nov. 30, 2002, Howell torched Minnesota for a school-record 38 points. In her final season with the Falcons, she set Division I school records in scoring average (17.4) and assists (119).
Howell spent her final two collegiate seasons at Nebraska, where she helped the Cornhuskers win 18 or more games twice. Nebraska won games in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament in both seasons, advancing to the WNIT Quarterfinals in Howell’s senior season, one where she led the team with 159 assists.
Howell earned a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree in Psychology from Nebraska in 2006. She followed that with a Master of Science in Health, Kinesiology and Sports Studies from Texas A&M-Commerce in 2011.
