After playing her final college season at Southeast Missouri, Kayla Fortner remains in Cape Girardeau for her first year as a volunteer assistant.
Fortner was a First-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference and Second-Team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region pick as a starting outfielder for the Redhawks in 2015.
She led the team in batting average (.389), runs scored (42), doubles (10), home runs (16), RBI (48), total bases (109), slugging percentage (.832), on-base percentage (.523), walks (37) and games started (46) last year. Fortner topped the OVC in slugging percentage and on-base percentage, and was second in batting average, home runs and walks. Nationally, she ranked among the top 30 in walks (25th) and home runs per game (29th).
Fortner, who hails from Cedar Hill, Mo., broke Southeast’s all-time single-season records in home runs and walks, and fell one RBI shy of breaking a third single-season mark. She led the team with 12 multiple-RBI games and finished the year with a season-long streak of 16-consecutive games where she reached base.
