MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Brendan Terry scored 13 points to lead five players in double figures as Southeast Missouri (9-8, 4-2) came up short in a 71-69 loss to Morehead State (8-9, 4-2) Saturday.
MSU led for just 3:35 but made the final push it needed to squeak by SEMO.
The Redhawks led, 58-48, with 10:55 remaining when the Eagles started to chip away.
After getting within three points or less on seven different occasions, MSU took the lead when Chase Dawson made a 3-pointer. Dawson's three gave the Eagles a 70-69 edge with 1:33 left.
Dawson was later fouled and made the second shot of his two free throws to make it a 71-69 game with eight seconds on the clock.
SEMO had a chance to tie it, but
BJ Ward's mid-range jumper came off the rim. After a replay review, the Redhawks maintained possession with 0.2 seconds. Time then ran out on the ensuing in-bounds pass.
Davion Cunningham scored 25 of his game-high 35 points in the second half to key the Eagles' comeback. Cunningham finished with 13-of-17 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws in 30 minutes off the bench.
MSU used an 8-0 run to take a 22-19 lead with 6:39 remaining in the first half.
Landren Blocker's 3-pointer tied the game at 22-22 and ignited a 12-2 surge that put SEMO ahead by 10.
Luke Almodovar scored eight points and buried a pair of 3-pointers before Ward's driving layup capped the jaunt giving the Redhawks a 34-24 advantage with 2:18 left.
Marqueas Bell's two free throws with five seconds on the clock put SEMO ahead, 38-30, at the half.
Bell's fast break layup gave the Redhawks their largest lead of the game at 56-44 with 12:24 in the second half.
MSU outscored SEMO, 41-31, in the second half, where it shot 68.2 percent (15-of-22) from the floor.
Terry was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and grabbed five rebounds to lead SEMO for the second game in a row. He made several huge baskets down the stretch to keep the Redhawks ahead until the final minutes.
Almodovar followed with 11 points, while Ward, Blocker and
Braxton Stacker each had 10.
SEMO turned the ball over a season-low five times and did not have a turnover for the first 28:09 of the contest.
The Redhawks return home to start their season-long four-game home stand vs. Lindenwood on Jan. 15. That game will be televised live on ESPNU.
