PEORIA, Ill. – #3 Southeast Missouri (25-18) stormed back to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning but came up short in a 5-4 extra-inning loss to #2 SIU Edwardsville (30-20) Thursday morning in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
Down, 4-2, SEMO rallied to send the game to extra innings in the top of the seventh on a wild sequence of events.
With one out, pinch-hitter
Hailey Burnett walked,
Tori Bradley followed with a pinch-hit single and
Madison Winkler singled up the middle to load the bases. On the next play,
Tatum Gerwitz singled. Initially, three runs scored on the play and an obstruction was called at home plate.
Following a replay review, the play was ruled dead and what would had been the winning run for SEMO was erased and runners were sent back to first and third with one out. SIUE proceeded to get out of the jam keeping the game tied at 4-4.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Raegan Duncan delivered a two-out walk-off single and Kaylin Fahy scored to give the Cougars their one-run win.
SIUE got on the board first in its opening at-bat of the game.
Emma Henderson reached on a one-out walk, advanced to second on a base hit by Anna Henderson and scored with the help of a fielder's choice and an error to put the Cougars ahead, 1-0.
Leadoff hitter Kaylynn Salyars added to SIUE's lead when she hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the second inning.
SEMO answered with a two-out double by
Sydney Melton to make it a one-run game in the top of the third. Melton 's 11
th double of the season landed in the right center gap scoring
Brooklyn Saysoff and
Sydney Dennis to cut the Cougars lead to 3-2.
The Cougars used their second home run of the game, this time a solo shot by Fahy, to widen their margin to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
Henderson (7-5) picked up the win. She allowed four runs on six hits, walked four and struck out five in eight innings.
Maddie Carney (3-7) was credited with the loss in relief. Carney gave up one run and five hits, walked one and struck out four in 3.2 innings.
Melton went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead SEMO, which finished with six hits.
The Redhawks face #5 Lindenwood in an elimination game at 3 p.m., CT Thursday.
