Redhawks Fall in Series-Opener to SIU Edwardsville

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Sydney Dennis went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI as Southeast Missouri (12-10, 5-2) dropped its series-opener to Ohio Valley Conference leader SIU Edwardsville (16-10, 7-0), 9-4, Friday.

SIUE hit three home runs to overcome a four-run deficit en route to its game one victory.

SEMO scored all of its runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning.

Hailey Burnett led things off with a walk and advanced to third on a double by Kinley Wilkins. Tatum Gerwitz followed with a single and Burnett scored the game's first run. Gerwitz stole second on the next play and Dennis ripped a double to left center scoring both Gerwitz and Wilkins. One more hit, this time a single by Sydney Melton, drove in Dennis to grab the Redhawks a 4-0 lead.

After that, SIUE scored once in the fourth before pulling within a run on a two-run home run by Kaylynn Salyers in the top of the fifth.

The Cougars used a two-run home run by Danielle Shuey as part of a three-run sixth inning before pinch-hitter Madison Kearns hit a three-run homer to finish off their 9-4 win in the seventh.

Emma Henderson (4-2) went the distance allowing four runs on eight hits. Henderson struck out four and walked two, as well.

Willow Van Haren (2-1) took the loss in relief. Van Haren gave up three runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Dennis pushed her hitting streak to 18 games. She doubled in each of her first two at-bats. Gerwitz followed with two hits and a run scored.
