HARROGATE, Tenn. - Southeast Missouri Tennis (5-5) goes 2-0 today as they defeat the University of the Cumberlands and Carson Newman University 4-1 in both matches Saturday night at the LMU tennis courts.
Maja Bajorek and Mia Mayerová go 2-0 in doubles play over the two matches today. They are now at .500 on the season with a 3-3 overall record when they play together.
In singles play Lera Valeeva, Juliette Demunck, and Yontha Tadoum all went 2-0 on the day. Tadoum captured her first career singles victory as a Redhawk.
Cumberland
The first match of the day started with doubles play, with the Redhawks clinching the doubles point. Bajorek and Mayerová took care of business again today and rolled past Karen Kondo and Victoria Zarate 6-3 on court two.
Lera Valeeva and Kristina Kozakova captured the doubles point beating Rita Liu and Mahira Hara at the No. 1 position 6-2. Yontha Tadoum and Juliette Demuncl went unfinished 5-3 on court three against the Phoenix's.
In singles action, the Redhawks won three matches in a row to clinch the match.
University of the Cumberland's Rion Yanama defeated Claudia Casas 6-0, 6-0 on court six for their one and only point of the match.
Tadoum and Demunck blew past their opponents, winning in straight sets. Tadoum, at No. 4, won 6-0, 6-1 against Zarate and Demunck on court three beat Hara 6-1, 6-3 to push the Redhawks lead to 3-1 in the match.
Valeeva clinched the fourth and final point for the Redhawks when she beat Kondo in a close 3-set match. Valeeva won the first set 6-1, fell in the second 6-2, and then won 10-7 in the third set on court one.
Carson Newman
Match two started with the Eagles taking the doubles point with a third match win on court three.
Lera Valeeva and Kristina Kozakova lost 6-0 at the No. 1 position to Edisa Hot and Kira Baacke. Maja Bajorek and Mia Mayerová tied up the doubles session winning 6-4 against Leah McBride and Sindija Manovska on court two.
Emma Sanchez and Maria Del Mar Sarda barely edged out Juliette Demunck and Yontha Tadoum 7-6 to capture the doubles point.
During singles action the Redhawks won four matches in a row to clinch the match 4-1. Tadoum breezed past Leah McBride 6-4, 6-1 on court four. Bajorek also beat her opponent in straight sets, winning 7-5, 6-4 against Emma Sanchez at No. 2.
At position No. 1, Valeeva went to three sets against Edisa Hot. Valeeva fell 6-4, won 6-4, then closed out the third set and won 10-5. Demunck also took an extra set to beat her opponent. Demunck beat Hala Awad 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 on court three.
Head Coach Steve Brooks said it was a great day for Redhawk tennis and thought Carson Newman was a good opponent saying how strong they were and how well coached they were. Coach Brooks said this about the Eagles, "Carson Newman could be a D1 program today and they are usually National ranked."
About the Redhawks Coach Brooks said, "I'm very proud of how the girls fought and how they found a way to win. That's going to help us a lot as the season progresses. I think the team is growing closer together and building more chemistry with each other. It's great to be back at .500 (5-5 record). One day better!"
The Redhawks will be back in action next Friday as the face Arkansas State in Arkansas at 4 p.m., CT.
