MONROE, La. – Southeast Missouri (5-5) rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning, but UL Monroe (11-7) hung on for a 4-3 victory Saturday night at the Best on the Bayou Tournament.
Down, 4-0, SEMO made it a one-run game in the top of the sixth inning.
With the bases loaded and no outs,
Brooklyn Saysoff doubled to right center and both
Tatum Gerwitz and
Madison Winkler scored on the play.
Gracie Luna followed with a single to center and
Sydney Dennis scored to cut ULM's lead to 4-3.
SEMO wound up leaving the bases loaded after ULM reliever Dakota Lake recorded three strikeouts.
Winkler doubled to left center and was thrown out at third base to start the top of the seventh. Lake then got the final two Redhawk hitters to groundout ending the game.
Maddie Nichols (1-2) earned the win after striking out three and walking one in five innings. Nichols also gave up three runs on six hits.
Lake was credited with her first save of the season.
Maddie Carney (1-2) took the loss. Carney gave up two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out one in four innings.
SEMO had eight hits with Dennis,
Sophie Schupp and Winkler getting two apiece.
The Redhawks resume play against Tarleton State (12:30 p.m.) and UL Monroe (5:30 p.m.) Saturday.
