MARTIN, Tenn. –
Braxton Stacker scored a career-high 22 points and made six 3-pointers and Southeast Missouri (8-7, 3-1) outscored UT Martin (6-9, 2-2) in the second half during a 66-63 loss Saturday at the Elam Center.
UTM ended SEMO's five-game winning streak and handed the Redhawks their first Ohio Valley Conference loss of the season.
The Redhawks and Skyhawks went wire-to-wire and SEMO had two opportunities to tie the game with 17 seconds on the clock. Instead, Teddy Washington, Jr. and
BJ Ward each missed 3-pointers as time expired.
SEMO never led in the game and was within three or less points a total of six times in the last 6:24.
Down, 47-36, with 11:52 remaining, Stacker gave the Redhawks a huge boost. He came off the bench to score the final nine points of a 12-2 run burying a 3-pointer on three-straight possessions to make it a 47-45 contest at the 10:13 mark.
After UTM responded with a 3-pointer by Tarence Guinyard, Stacker stepped back and buried another trey to get the Redhawks within two again (50-48).
The Skyhawks managed to get ahead by seven points twice before it was a two-possession game the rest of the way.
Stacker's career-high sixth 3-pointer narrowed UTM's lead to 63-61 and
Rob Martin's layup then closed the Skyhawks margin to 65-63 with 23 seconds to go.
Filip Radakovic split two free throws six seconds later giving the Redhawks one last chance.
SEMO outscored UTM, 40-33, in the second half.
Carlos Cortijo made a 3-pointer to ignite a 12-2 run that put UTM ahead by double figures in the first half.
Bukumirovic buried a 3-pointer, was fouled, completed a 4-point play and then scored a layup. Cortijo followed with a jumper, was fouled and added a free throw to push the Skyhawks lead to 33-21 with 1:14 remaining.
Elliot Lowndes' dunk with 12 seconds left dropped UTM's score to 33-23 at the half.
SEMO was tied or within a point four times in the game's opening 20 minutes.
Stacker made 8-of-13 field goals and nailed 6-of-9 from 3-point range. He also registered a career-high four blocks in 26 minutes.
Washington, Jr. narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. It was Washington, Jr.'s 12
th double-digit game in 14 starts this year.
The Skyhawks missed just two free throws (19-of-21) and outscored SEMO, 19-7, at the charity stripe.
UTM, which has just five players from the United States on its roster, was led by Guinyard's 14 points. Vladimer Salaridze finished with a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds.
SEMO, Morehead State, Tennessee Tech and Little Rock are tied for first in the OVC standings following Saturday's action. LR has played one less conference game.
The Redhawks return to Cape Girardeau to host Southern Indiana on Jan. 9.
