Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Redhawks Fall, 64-61, Saturday Afternoon

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri Women's Basketball (4-11, 2-4 OVC) fell in a heartbreaker to Morehead State (7-9, 2-4 OVC) by a final score of 64-61 at the Show Me Center on Saturday afternoon. 
 
Da'Kariya Jackson led the Redhawks offense with 20 points on 7-15 shooting from the field. She was 4-5 from three-point range. As a team, SEMO shot 35.5-percent from the field (22-62), 38.9-percent from three (7-18), but shot just 55.6 at the free throw line (10-18). 
 
The Redhawks totaled 30 rebounds as a team, led by Briah Hampton who had a career-high 11 rebounds, including eight on the defensive end. SEMO forced 17 turnovers converting them into 20 points. Skylar Barnes and Jariyah Williamson led the Redhawks in steals with three each. 
 
The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 run with three-straight field goals and a free throw to open the game before Da'Kariya Jackson got SEMO on the board with 6:39 left in the opening frame. 
 
The Redhawks would go on an 8-0 run continued by a layup from Ainaya Williams off a beautiful assist from Skylar Barnes
 
A pair of Barnes free throws followed by a Briah Hampton layup gave SEMO its first lead of the contest, 8-7, with 5:23 to go in the first quarter. 
 
MSU would crash the offensive glass to regain the lead, but a Jackson three-pointer regained a two-point advantage for the Redhawks nearing the end of the quarter. 
 
With the game tied at 11, Zoe Best got on the scoring sheet with a three-pointer of her own to make it 14-11 Redhawks with 3:45 left to go.
 
MSU would close the first quarter on a 10-0 run, capped off by a pullup jump shot by Chrishawwn Coleman to take a 21-14 lead into the second quarter. 
 
Lexi McCully opened the scoring in the second quarter with an offensive rebound and putback for the Redhawks to make it 21-16 visitors. 
 
MSU would extend their lead out to 11 a few minutes later with a three from Alyssa Berry forcing the Redhawks into a timeout. A pair of Coleman free throws put MSU up by 13, 29-16 giving MSU its biggest lead of the contest. 
 
Best would halt the MSU scoring with a pair of free throws, but the Eagles would score two-straight baskets, with an Anjelicia Del Valle free throw mixed in, to make it 33-19 Eagles with 4:13 left before half. 
 
Da'Kariya Jackson hit the last shot of the half with a three-pointer to make it 37-24 Eagles at halftime. 
 
Jackson led the Redhawks in scoring at the break with eight points on 3-6 shooting from the field and 2-3 from three-point range. As a team, SEMO shot jut 27.6-percent from the field (8-29) but were an impressive 83.3-percent from the free throw line (5-6). 
 
SEMO lost the battle on the glass in the first half by a 20-13 margin. Jackson led the Redhawks with five first half rebounds. 
 
Ainaya Williams got the Redhawks on the board in the second half with a turnaround jump shot in the lane to cut the visitor's lead to just 13 with 9:13 left in the third. 
 
Lexi McCully and Skylar Barnes combined for a 5-0 run with a two pointer and three pointer, respectively to trim it to just a five-point deficit with just under three minutes in the third quarter. 
 
A three-pointer from Jackson with 1:41 left in the third cut it to just a three-point game. She would add another two-point basket to cut it to 48-45 at the end of the third. 
 
Jackson opened the fourth quarter with another three-pointer to tie the game for the first time since the opening quarter with 9:53 to go in the contest. 
 
A 4-0 run by the Eagles would make it 52-48 before a Skylar Barnes free throw halted the Eagles' run. 
 
Trailing 58-51, Zoe Best hit a big three pointer in the corner to get the Redhawks back to within four points with just over five minutes to go in the game. The three would spark a 7-0 run to tie the contest at 58. 
 
A pair of McCully free throws would give the Redhawks its first lead since the first quarter with just 1:42 left to go in the game. 
 
The Eagles would close the game on a 6-1 run to hold on for a 64-61 victory on Saturday afternoon.
