Baseball Downs Missouri State, 5-3, Tuesday Night

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri Baseball (26-23) picked up win number 26 on Tuesday night with a 5-3 win over in-state foe Missouri State (19-29) after a 1:12 rain delay at Capaha Field.

Play was suspended in the bottom of the third inning due to a storm that passed through the Cape Girardeau area with the Redhawks winning, 2-1.

LHP Ethan Osborne (1-3) picked up his first win of the season as he hurled 2.0 innings of scoreless baseball without allowing a hit. He punched out four Bears in his outing.

As a pitching staff, SEMO recorded a season-high 18 strikeouts in the contest. RHP Payton Lawrence started the contest and recorded a team-high seven strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. He allowed just one run on one hit over 11 hitters faced.

SEMO got on the board in the second inning thanks to defensive miscues from the visitors. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch brought in Caleb Corbin from third base and a throwing error by the catcher scored Josh Cameron who was rounding third base on the wild pitch.

Two straight outs ended the inning, but SEMO led 2-0 after two innings.

With two outs in the third inning, MSU's Cody Kelly hit a solo home run to cut the SEMO lead in half.

After the rain delay subsided, both sides struggled offensively as the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings were scoreless frames on both sides.

The Redhawks tacked on some insurance in the home seventh thanks to a one-out, two-RBI single by Michael Mugan. Mugan scorched a base hit to center field to score Brooks Kettering and pinch-hitter Keoni Coloma

Two batters prior to Mugan, Kettering singled through the right side to score the first run of the inning. After the sequence, SEMO led 5-1 entering the eighth inning.

MSU scored two runs in the eighth inning via a two-run home run by Kelly again got the Bears to within two.

RHP #7 Kyle Miller entered in the ninth inning and picked up his sixth save of the season to shut the door on MSU. Miller, who made his 79th appearance in a SEMO uniform, allowed just a hit, and struck out three hitters to end the game.
