MARTIN, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri (25-23, 19-7) split a doubleheader with UT Martin (29-21, 14-12) Saturday. SEMO won the first game, 4-0, but dropped the nightcap, 3-1.
Kat Sackett and
Marissa Peek each hit a home run to propel SEMO to its game one win.
Sackett put the Redhawks ahead early when she smacked a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. For Sackett, it was her fourth round-tripper of the season.
Two innings later, Peek hit a two-out solo home run over the left field wall to push SEMO's lead to 4-0 and that was the end of the scoring. Peek recorded her team-high seventh home run in 2024.
Paytience Holman (14-8) tossed her team-best fourth shutout. Holman went the distance for her eighth complete game of the season allowing just three hits and striking out four along the way. Her 14 wins are most in a season in her career.
Katie Dreiling (7-6), who played her freshman year at SEMO, took the loss. Dreiling gave up four hits and four runs in four innings. She struck out three and walked one, as well.
SEMO finished with six hits. Peek went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI to lead the way, while Sackett was 1-for-3 with a run and three RBI.
Kynzie Wrigley,
Gracie Luna and
Tori Bradley had one hit apiece.
Game two featured a nice pitcher's duel between SEMO freshman
Tegan Livesay and UTM's Brooklyn Linneman.
Livesay retired 14 of the 17 hitters she faced and Linneman sat down nine of her first 10 hitters.
After each team went scoreless through three innings,
Paige Halliwill scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth. Halliwill was hit by a pitch, stole second and went to third when Peek grounded out. After Sackett walked, pinch-runner
Sophie Schupp advanced to second on a throwing error and Halliwll scored to give the Redhawks a 1-0 edge.
Livesay gave way to reliever
Maddie Carney with a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Back-to-back bunt singles and an infield hit led to the Skyhawks tying the game. Kyla Harley scored the tying run on Anna Blanton's bunt to make it a 1-1 contest.
UTM loaded the bases again in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice. The Skyhawks added one more unearned run to polish off their 3-1 win.
SEMO had just two hits and committed four errors in the nightcap.
Carney (5-6) suffered the loss in the circle.
The Redhawks face the Skyhawks in their regular-season finale Sunday at 1 p.m., CT.
