Affolter Notches Three Hits in Sunday’s Series Finale Against Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Brittany Affolter went 3-for-4 and Southeast Missouri (12-20, 7-5) nearly overcame a five-run deficit in a tight 5-4 loss to Southern Indiana (14-13, 8-4) Saturday.

With the win, USI took the series edging SEMO by a run in two of the three contests.

The Redhawks trailed, 5-0, after the Screaming Eagles scored twice in the first inning and three times in the second.

SEMO mounted a strong comeback late putting up two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to make it a one-run game.

Marissa Peek delivered a two-RBI double in the fifth. Abigail Rickermann hit a run-scoring single and Aubrie Shore hit a sacrifice fly to narrow USI's lead to 5-4 in the sixth.

Tatum Gerwitz represented the tying run in scoring position when she walked and stole second in the top of the seventh. However, Josie Newman recorded two strikeouts to hold off the Redhawks.

Newman (12-5) went the distance giving up four runs on 11 hits to go along with seven strikeouts.

Paytience Holman (7-8) took the loss.

SEMO registered 11 hits. Paige Halliwill joined Affolter with multiple hits. Halliwill went 2-for-4 on the day.

The Redhawks head to #12 Missouri for a midweek doubleheader on Apr. 3.
