Redhawks End 2023-24 Season With 70-59 Loss to Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Southeast Missouri (9-20, 6-12 OVC) fell short in their final game against Southern Indiana (22-6, 17-1 OVC) Saturday night at the Screaming Eagles Arena by a final score of 70-59.

The Redhawks were great on the glass, out rebounding the Screaming Eagles in offensive rebounds 25 to five. This is their season high and the most offensive rebounds since Jan. 2, 2021 when they notched 25 against Tennessee State.

Jaliyah Green scored the most on the night with 17. The junior shot 5-of-22 (22.7%) from the field, 4-of-10 from behind the arc, and 3-of-4 from the stripe.

Alecia Doyle and Kiyley Flowers notched double digit points as well, scoring 11 and ten. They pulled in seven rebounds a piece, with five being offensive for Doyle.

Vanessa Shafford led USI with 26 points, shooting a crazy 6-of-9 (66.7%) from deep and 100% from the line (4-4). 

As a team SEMO shot 19-of-73 (26%) from the floor, 8-of-29 (27.6%) from downtown, and 13-of-19 (68.4%) from the charity stripe. USI had clips of 20-41 (48.8%), 8-17 (47.1), and 22-30 (73.3%).

The Screaming Eagles posted 23 bench points compared to SEMO's 11. The Redhawks were active on defense, stealing the ball 13 times compared to USI's four.

The game featured one lead change as Southern Indiana led for a total of 37:45.

Right off the real the Redhawks forced two turnovers in a row then Green drove in and kicked it back out to Indiya Bowen for the three to get them on the board.

After that, SEMO struggled offensively, USI got up by eight with three baskets from behind the arc by USI's Shafford. The Screaming Eagles held SEMO scoreless for 5:30 and the Redhawks shot 1-of-12 from the field and 1-of-8 from deep.

SEMO finally ended their run when Abbigail Stevens made a layup off of a nice dish from Daejah Richmond.

At the end of the quarter Southern Indiana led 20-10 and were 5-10 from the floor, and 3-5 from three. They went on a scoring run of 13 during the quarter. SEMO was 3-15 from the floor and 2-10 from deep.

SEMO had life entering the second quarter. Doyle out jumped everyone and snatched the offensive rebound and put it back through the net at the 8:44 mark to cut their lead to ten.

USI had other plans. The Eagles got up by 15 quickly making five of their next six shots. They went on a 10-0 run in 3:00 and held the Redhawks to 1-of-8 during the stretch.

That run would prompt a SEMO timeout with 7:43 left in the quarter.

Flowers got hot after the timeout, she buried a deep three to beat the shot clock. Then followed that up with a step back three to keep SEMO alive, but USI's Tori Handley answered with a three of her own to put the score at 22-35 with 2:04 left to play.

The Redhawks went back and forth with the Screaming Eagles both matching each other's buckets.

At the end of the quarter Mayfield tipped in the missed layup and made the and-one to go into the locker room on a positive note.

At the half SEMO was down 25-38, Flowers had seven points, and was shooting 50% (2-4) from downtown while tacking on two assists. USI had two in double digit figures with Shafford and Chole Gannon posting 11 and 12 points. Gannon was 5-of-5 from the floor.

In the quarter SEMO shot 26.3% and was 23.5% (8-34) in the first half. USI was 50% (5-10) from deep. Both shot well from the line in the first half, the Redhawks were 5-7 (71.4%) and USI was 9-11 (81.8%)

During the first half USI led for 17:45.

The third quarter saw the Redhawks battle back, cutting the deficit ten.

Their run started when Doyle notched another offensive rebound and put it back up and on the next possession Green drove in for the layup at the 7:38 mark. SEMO was down 29-44.

Bowen two stepped it into the lane to continue the offensive explosion for SEMO at the 4:37 mark.

Flowers then proceeded to make a three right before the media to put the score at 34-45.  Going into the timeout Southeast was on a 9-2 run and Flowers made three of her last four shots.

SEMO cut their lead to ten out of the media when Stevens got fouled and made both from the line, but Shafford answered with her fifth three pointer.

Green buried a three to cut USI's lead to eight with 6.3 seconds remaining in the third but right at the buzzer Madi Webb was left open on a jumper to go back up by ten.

Southeast was down 41 to 51 and had their best quarter, scoring 16 points. 

Green continued the Redhawks hot streak by putting a deep three through the net, with the score at 44-51.

SEMO was fighting for everything. In one possession SEMO grabbed five offensive rebounds and Stevens was finally sent to the line. 

The last media was called and the Redhawks were down by nine with 6:35 left on the season.

At  5:16 Southern Indiana's Shafford made her sixth three, halting the Redhawks' run.

SEMO tried to fight back, coming within eight at one point. Buchanan pulled down the 23rd offensive rebound for the Redhawks and made both free throws, followed by Green making another three with 2:12 left.

After that SEMO got into foul trouble. Flowers, Buchanan, and Mayfield all recorded their fourth foul forcing them to sit for a bit.

With 58 seconds left, Shafford made both her free throws ultimately ending the game.
