Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls 64-61 on Saturday Afternoon

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri Women's Basketball (8-19, 5-11 OVC) fell to UT Martin (13-14, 10-6 OVC) on Saturday afternoon by three points with a final score of 64-61.
 
Freshman Indiya Bowen led the team in points again tonight. Bowen finished with 13 points, making four of eight three-point attempts. Her other point came from the line, where she went 1-2. 
 
Alecia Doyle finished right behind Bowen with 12 points going 5-13 from the field. Doyle also added three rebounds and one steal. 
 
As a team SEMO shot 38.3% from the field, going 23-60. The Redhawks went 8-23 (34.8%) from behind the arc and 7-11 (63.6%) from the free throw line. 
 
For the Skyhawks, Kenley McCarn had a team high 24 points. McCarn and Josie Storey both made four three-pointers on the night. UT Martin shot 40.4% from the field, 47.8% from three-point land, and 83.3% from the stripe. 
 
On the first possession of the game Megan Barton drove to the basket to get the Redhawks on the scoreboard first. 
 
Amiyah Buchanan blocked a shot on the defensive end to lead to an Abbigail Stevens score on back-to-back buckets to put SEMO up by four with 4:42 left in the quarter.
 
Deajah Richmond would then go on a run for the Redhawks ending with a pull up three.
At the late media timeout Richmond had seven points on a 3-4 shooting clip with SEMO winning 13-11.
 
Right out of the media SEMO extended their lead to four with a pull up Alecia Doyle.
 
At the end of quarter one the redhawks lead 15 - 13 but were 1-8 from deep while UTM was 2-3.
 
The second got started off with a deep three pointer from Doyle and Flowers getting her first assist with 9:07 left.
 
The Redhawks went on a little run to go up by seven with 7:00 left.
 
Flowers dished out her second assist to Green for a three pointer right before media with Redhawks up 23-16.
 
At the media break, the Redhawks were shooting an impressive 41.7% (10-27). 
 
Out of the media, the Skyhawks were on fire, starting a 12-0 run to get their momentum rolling. It started with two buckets from UT Martin's Anaya Brown. She took a defensive rebound coast to coast bringing UTM within one.
 
During the stretch SEMO had four turnovers in four possessions and went one of seven from the floor.
 
The Skyhawks continued to put it on the Redhawks with two more threes from UTM's Kenley McCarn and Josie Storey to put them up 28-23.
 
SEMO finally stopped the run with a floating jump shot by Flowers, and she completed the and-one to make it 28-26 but UTM's Brown made another three for the Skyhawks right at the buzzer.
 
At the half Brown had 12 points and six rebounds for the Skyhawks while they were 6-10 from three-point land.
 
SEMO was 3-14 from the floor with Doyle and Richmond as the leading scorers with seven apiece.
 
Right out of the gate SEMO brought it within two when Buchanan made a wide-open layup coming from Green at the 9:08 mark.
 
Not much would happen on both ends until Flowers jumped in front of an inbound pass and took it to the house.
 
Both teams would go back and forth right before the media. Flowers, still being active on defense, blocked a three which led to a made three by Doyle putting the Redhawks back on top, leading 37-36 with 4:44 left.
 
Going into the media both teams would trade deep buckets from deep by UTM's McCarn and SEMO's Bowen.
 
At the first media of the second half SEMO led 40 - 38 with 3:28 left to play in the quarter.
 
Out of the media Bowen came off a screen and put the ball right into the hoop for her second three of the game.
 
Bowen would then put the Redhawks up by six going into the final quarter after Richmond bullied her way into the paint to bring in two offensive rebounds.
 
At the quarter Bowen had scored a quick ten points and the Redhawks were 14 - 34 (41.2%) while Martin was 18 - 45 (40%) but 50% from deep.
 
UTM started off the fourth by making three buckets, with two coming from downtown. The Skyhawks led 49 - 48 with 7:30 minutes left in the game. 
 
At media the Redhawks were only down by three but went 1-5 in the first 5:00 minutes. SEMO was also on a 3:30 scoring drought with UTM going on a 6-0 run into the media.
 
The Skyhawks went up by six after they hauled in three offensive rebounds, with two coming from UTM's Brown. 
 
Both teams went on cold streaks for the next 3:00 minutes until Flowers recorded her fifth assist when she drove in and kicked it back out to Bowen for the three, putting the Hawks down four with 1:24 remaining.
 
In the final minute the Redhawks slowly fought back. Green made both her free throws and Flowers registered her sixth steal for an easy layup to tie it at 59 with 22 seconds left to play. 
 
Richmond committed a foul and McCarn made both free throws prompting a SEMO timeout with 14 seconds left.
 
With the game on the line Bowen tried to drive in for a layup but missed. 
 
Lexi Rubel only made one free throw and Flowers took the easy layup instead of a three. McCarn would then end the game making both free throws with one second remaining. 
 
Looking Ahead
The Redhawks will be back in action against Morehead State next Thursday in Morehead, Ky.
