Redhawks fall to Tennessee Tech Saturday 65 to 76

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Southeast Missouri State Women's basketball (5-11, 2-3 OVC) fell to Tennessee Tech (7-9, 2-3 OVC) Saturday in Hooper Eblen Center. The Redhawks lost 65-76.

Alecia Doyle led the Redhawks in scoring with 23 points. Doyle went 8-19 from the field,  recorded seven rebounds and three assists. Two other Redhawks finished with double-digit points. Indiya Bowen finished with 12 points and Julia Sion finished with ten.

Harley Paynter led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 21 points. Graduate Student Maaliya Owens added 19 points, with 15 of her points coming from behind the arc. 

SEMO had nine steals, 32 rebounds, and 13 assists throughout the contest. Kiyley Flowers led the Redhawks in all those categories, finishing with four steals, nine rebounds, and four assists.

Julia Sion first put the Redhawks on the scoreboard with a nice paint move that sent her to the stripe. Sion knocked down her free three for a three-point play.  

Indiya Bowen hit a pull up corner two-pointer to put the Redhawks up by five early on.

Fouls were an early theme for both teams in the first quarter. There were eight total fouls in the first six minutes of the quarter, four by SEMO and four by TTU. SEMO ended the quarter with six fouls, two by Jaliyah Green. 

Bowen ended the first leading the Redhawks with six points going two for three from the field.

In the middle of the second, at the 5:37 mark Bowen hit a three point jumper off of the pass from Alecia Doyle to put the redhawks up five.

The Redhawks were tied with Tennessee Tech 20 to 20, then Doyle led SEMO on a 13-0 run that lasted 3:45. Doyle ended the second quarter with eight points going 4-5 from the field.

Late in the second, Sion got to the line and went 1-2, to put the Redhawks up by 12 with 1:29 left in the quarter. 

Kiyley Flowers hit a deep three as the shot clock was expiring with under a minute left in the half. That three was her only one of the game.

Doyle got the Redhawks started in the third with a step back mid range jumper right at the stripe to put SEMO up 28-38. 

In the middle of the third, Tennessee Tech went on a 9-0 run that lasted 4:09. SEMO had a scoring drought that lasted for 5:22. 

Flowers played some scrappy defense and dove on the ground to get a steal. From the ground, Flowers passed it to Sion for a fast break layup. Then Late in the third, Flowers hit a two point jump shot to give SEMO the lead 48-46. 

In the fourth quarter, Amiyah Buchanan grabbed an offensive rebound off of a missed three pointer from Megan Barton. Buchanan then faked, made a move under the basket and made a layup making the score 54-61. 

Doyle two stepped and got a foul called which sent her to the line. Doyle then makes both from the line to bring the redhawks to ten, 56-66. Right after Doyle made both from the line, Jaliyah Green got a steal and fed the ball to Barton for the right handed layup. 

Late in the fourth, Doyle took a dribble drive to the basket and scored with a layup to bring the Redhawks down nine, 60-69. 


Trying to fight back late, the Redhawks got another steal. This time it was Daejah Richmond who then passed it to Green for a layup.  

SEMO ended up shooting 45.3% from the field and 83.3% from the free throw line but only 20% from behind the arc compared to TTU who shot 33.3% from deep, going 5-9 in the second half.

SEMO will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 20 against SIUE at the Show Me Center.
