CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri's tight ends constantly look for ways to be more involved in the offense and they are always driven by the team's success.
Grit and toughness define the position and execution is the reward for these servant leaders.
"They come to work and get better every day," said second-year SEMO Tight Ends Coach Cole Cook. "They take the things we talk about in the meeting room and execute them on the field."
Along with blocking, SEMO's tight ends want to be good route-runners in any new schemes that get them more touches.
"We always talk about making the easy blocks and catches you are supposed to," said Cook. "At the end of the day, guys depend on us to get the job done so we are doing whatever it takes to increase our role in the offense."
The Redhawks lost their starting All-Ohio Valley Conference tight end in Will Weidemann but is in good shape with the return of Danny Joiner and Braden Thompson.
Joiner is expected to take over the starting job after seeing action in nine games during his first year at SEMO in 2022. He made seven catches for 37 yards and averaged 5.3 yards per reception.
Thompson played in five games on special teams as a true freshman.
"Danny and Braden are so much easier to coach now because they know what I expect," commented Cook. "I really enjoy watching them grow as players and leaders."
Mitchell Sellers, a transfer from Southern Mississippi, adds to the depth. Sellers spent the last two years there and did not see action in 2022.
"Mitchell is a good target. He is long, can run and can high point a ball," said Cook. "He has been a great asset thus far and is going to fit right in with this group."
Nolan Reed, Andrew Civey and Jackson Hills are the rest of the tight ends.
Reed redshirted a year ago, while Civey joins the Redhawks from North County High School (Bonne Terre, Mo.) and Hills comes to SEMO from Sullivan H.S. (Indiana).
