CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The reigning Ohio Valley Conference Champion Southeast Missouri football team will play an 11-game schedule that includes four games at the new Houck Field this upcoming 2023 season.
 
SEMO kicks off the season at Football Bowl Subdivision and Big 12 Conference member Kansas State on Sept. 2. KSU won the 2022 Big 12 Conference title when it beat #3 TCU, 31-28, on a 31-yard field goal in overtime. The Wildcats finished with an overall record of 10-4 and 7-2 in the Big 12.
 
A monumental moment awaits SEMO during week two when it plays host to in-state foe Lindenwood (Sept. 9) in its Ohio Valley Conference opener. The Redhawks will open its brand new state-of-the-art football stadium against the Lions. 
 
The $15,978,000 project includes construction and replacement of the south sideline and grandstand of Houck Field as well as new seating, turf replacement, concession stands, restrooms, ADA access and associated HVAC, mechanical and other systems work.
 
A week later, the Redhawks welcome longtime rival Southern Illinois (Sept. 16) for the annual "War for the Wheel." This year marks the 91st meeting between the teams. SEMO will look to keep the wheel trophy in Cape Girardeau after knocking off the then-#17 Salukis in Carbondale a year ago.
 
After that, SEMO travels to former OVC member Eastern Kentucky (Sept. 23) and visits Central Arkansas (Oct. 7). The Redhawks return the trip to UCA on the backend of a home-and-home series.
 
The Redhawks then host Eastern Illinois (Oct. 14) on Homecoming before hitting the road for four of their last five games of the regular season.
 
SEMO heads to Tennessee Tech (Oct. 21) and completes a home-and-home series with a trip to Nicholls State (Oct. 28). 
 
The Redhawks face Robert Morris (Nov.) in their final home matchup.
 
SEMO wraps up its 11-game regular season slate with trips to UT Martin (Nov. 11) and Bryant (Nov. 18). The Redhawks and Skyhawks shared the OVC title, although the teams did not face each other last season. 
 
The Redhawks and Skyhawks were later involved in a coin flip that determined the league's automatic berth. SEMO won the coin flip immediately following games on the final day of the 2022 season and represented the OVC in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs.
 
In December, the OVC and Big South Conference announced a joint association of the league's football member institutions. The 2023 campaign marks the first year for the merger meaning the 10 combined teams (6 OVC, 4 Big South) will play a six-game conference schedule. SEMO's matchups with Robert Morris and Bryant are part of this year's conference slate.
