CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri (15-2, 5-0) secured its second Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title in program history with a 6-1 win over Eastern Illinois (12-10, 3-2) Thursday afternoon at the John C. Bierk Tennis Complex.
SEMO claimed the No. 1 seed in next week's six-team OVC Tournament scheduled for Apr. 21-23 at the Larry J. Heflin Tennis Center in Paducah, Kentucky. The Redhawks will open postseason play in the semifinals at 10 a.m., CT on Apr. 22. Their opponent will be determined once final seeding is set.
The Redhawks put the exclamation point on another outstanding regular-season with yet another dominating effort.
SEMO is on a program record 14-match winning streak. The Redhawks also earned their 15
th win and finished with 15 victories in a season for the third-straight year for the first time in program history. Additionally, SEMO went undefeated in OVC play and won the league's regular-season crown for the second time in three years.
SEMO seized the momentum early by grabbing the doubles point with victories in the top two positions of its lineup.
Romana Tarajova and
Ksenia Shikanova beat Christine Gouws and Addison Brown at No. 1, and
Daniela Hlacikova and
Teona Velkoska defeated Jemma Booth and Brittany Steven at No. 2. Both of those matchups were decided by identical 6-3 scores. The No. 3 contest between Trinity Calinescu/
Vivian Lai and Lauren Ellis/E. Bukraba-Ulanova went unfinished with the Redhawks ahead, 4-3.
Tarajova's 6-4, 6-3 win over Eukraba-Ulanova in No. 2 singles nailed down the fourth point and match victory for the Redhawks. The win was the seventh-straight for Tarajova in singles action.
Like Tarajova, Shikanova, Lai, Calinescu and Velkoska won in straight sets, as well.
Lai scored SEMO's first singles point with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Addison Brown in the No. 4 spot. For Lai, it was her 10th singles win in a row. Shikanova then took care of Jemma Booth, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 before Tarajova's victory.
Calinescu won her 11
th-consecutive singles match at 6-3, 6-1 over Brittany Steven at No. 5 and Velkoska kept here winning streak intact at a team-best 13 in a row when she upended Lauren Ellis, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 6 position.
