Redhawks Storm Past Southern Illinois, 9-0, in Five Innings

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Marisa Davis pitched a complete game two-hit shutout and Southeast Missouri (21-9) cruised to a 9-0 win over longtime rival Southern Illinois (29-8) Tuesday afternoon at the Southeast Softball Complex.

SEMO took care of SIU in five innings for its fifth run-rule victory in its last seven games. The Redhawks also extended their winning streak to 27-straight victories on their home diamond.

Not to mention, SEMO scored its second-most runs in a game against the Salukis during their series that includes 98 meetings between the teams dating back to 1977.

The Redhawks immediately went to work on SIU starting pitcher Elliott Stinson.

Jillian Anderson and Paige Halliwill each walked to start the bottom of the first inning before Alyson Tucker sent her third home run of the season over the left field wall to give SEMO an early 3-0 advantage.

With two on and two outs after Anderson walked and Halliwill doubled, SEMO added two unearned runs when SIU first baseman Sidney Jones couldn't come up with a pop up.

The Redhawks continued to have their way with the Salukis getting three more runs when Anderson ripped a bases clearing three-RBI double into left field to make it an 8-0 ballgame in the third inning.

Tucker walked and scored the final run of the game on a double by Kat Sackett to polish off the 9-0 victory in the bottom of the fourth.

Davis was outstanding inside the circle striking out three of the first five hitters she faced. She held SIU hitless for her first two innings and only one Saluki baserunner made it into scoring position for the day. Davis improved to 8-1 this year.

SEMO outhit SIU, 8-2. Sackett finished with two hits, while Anderson and Tucker each delivered three-RBI hits and scored. Anderson and Halliwill scored twice apiece.

The Redhawks, now on a seven-game winning streak, return to Ohio Valley Conference action for a three-game series at Lindenwood on Apr. 15-16.
