Redhawks Drop Series Opener at UT Martin in Four Sets Friday

MARTIN, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (7-8, 2-1 OVC) dropped a hard fought four-set match (19-25, 28-30, 25-17, 19-25) to UT Martin (10-7, 4-0 OVC) Friday at Skyhawk Fieldhouse. 
 
Zoey Beasley led the Redhawks attack with 15 kills and seven digs. Kayla Closset and Ramiri Gardner each added eight kills. Closset posted nine digs and four blocks while Gardner chipped in five blocks.
 
UTM jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the match Friday. 

Three-straight kills from Beasley then knotted the frame at 4-4. 
 
The senior from Paragould, Arkansas, had eight kills in the opening set on an impressive .700 clip.
 
The Skyhawks took a 15-12 lead into the media timeout. A block assist from Mackenzie Meehan and Closset followed by a UTM error cut the deficit to 18-16.
 
Consecutive rally stoppers from Gardner trimmed the edge to one, 20-19, and prompted a Skyhawks timeout.  
 
UT Martin then claimed the opening frame, 25-19, after a 5-0 run. The Skyhawks posted a hitting mark of .333 to commence the match Friday. 
 
The marathon second frame then featured 19 ties and nine lead changes. The Redhawks hit a match high .277 as Beasley chipped in five kills during the set. 
 
The Skyhawks started the second set with a 4-2 lead. A kill from Colby Greene cut the margin to 7-6 before a UTM miscue evened the set at 7-7.
 
Greene added another kill to keep the frame tied (8-8).
 
Gardner chipped in consecutive rally stoppers for another tie score line at 11-11. 
 
The Skyhawks held a slight lead of 15-14 at the media break.
 
Greene came up with a massive solo block after an Addy McAleer winner to shift the lead to SEMO, 17-16. 
 
McAleer added another kill followed by a rally stopper from Beasley to increase the advantage to 21-19. The Skyhawks then went on a 5-1 run to bring on set point at 24-22. 
 
SEMO fended off set point with two Beasley winners that bookended a Skyhawks error, 25-24. 
 
A kill from Greene followed by a block assist by Gardner and Greene kept the SEMO edge at one, 27-26 and then 28-27. 
 
The Skyhawks then seized the set with three-straight points, 30-28. Logan Wallick connected on a pair of kills and Haeleigh Paulino added a service ace. 
 
SEMO then cut the UTM lead in the match to 2-1 with a 25-17 third frame. 
 
The Skyhawks jumped out to a 6-1 lead that the Redhawks trimmed to 7-6. 
 
SEMO then utilized a 9-1 swing to pull ahead 15-9. Closset registered consecutive solo blocks before a Tara Beilsmith service ace and a block by Gardner and Greene wrapped the sequence.  
 
Gardner then slammed consecutive kills before an Izzy Lukens ace extended the margin to 18-10. 
 
Closset added an ace after a Skyhawk error to widen the gap to 20-12. 
 
UTM then clawed within five (20-15) after a 3-0 run before a kill from Greene sealed the set, 25-17, for the Redhawks.
 
SEMO out hit the Skyhawks, .174 to -0.029, in the third set.
 
In the fourth set, it was all the Redhawks for the opening five points. Closset had four out of her six fourth-set kills (.385) right out of the gates. 
 
A kill from Avery Torrey made the SEMO lead 7-4 and brought on a UTM timeout. 
 
The Redhawks then went on a 4-0 run punctuated by a McAleer ace to bring the score to 13-8.
 
A 7-0 response from the Skyhawks then switched the lead to the home team, 16-14. 
 
UTM then added consecutive block assists for a 19-16 edge. 
 
Greene added a kill to cut the deficit to 22-19 before the Skyhawks grabbed the match with three-straight points. 
 
Greene finished with six kills and a career-best matching six blocks. Meehan added five kills and four blocks. Torrey tallied four rally stoppers.
 
Lukens dished out 23 assists with six digs and two aces. Kaelyn O'Brien registered 15 assists and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. 
 
Beilsmith grabbed 31 digs with five assists, an ace, and a kill. It marked her second-straight 30 dig match and fourth of the season. 
 
McAleer finished with five digs, three kills, and an ace. 
 
Wallick led UTM with 16 kills, four blocks, and four digs. Karen Scanlon added 12 kills, six blocks, and four digs. 
 
Paulino divvied out 20 assists with eight digs while Addy Vaughn posted 16 assists. Dylan Mott grabbed 17 digs while Kambree Lucas and Kayla Carrell each had 10. 
 
SEMO held a slight lead in blocks, 12-11, while UTM held the advantage in aces, 8-6. The Skyhawks outhit the Redhawks, .169 to .156. 
 
The loss marks the first for SEMO in Ohio Valley Conference play in 2022. Friday was the Redhawks first OVC road match of the season. 
 
SEMO next wraps the road series with UT Martin Saturday morning. First service is at 11 am, CT at Skyhawk Fieldhouse.
