Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Redhawks Register First Victory of the Season with 2-0 Decision Over Illinois Springfield Sunday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's soccer picked up its first win of the 2022 season, a 2-0 shutout of Illinois Springfield, Sunday evening at Houck Field.

Zoey Memmel and Cayla Koerner both found the back of the net in the Redhawks home opener.

SEMO struck first in the 15th minute of the match. A beautiful through ball from midfielder Faith Liljegren found Memmel on a breakaway.

Memmel, a junior from Grafton, Wisconsin, then slotted the ball past UIS goalkeeper Allison Mirimanian to give the Redhawks a 1-0 advantage.

The goal was the second for Memmel in her career at SEMO. She finished Sunday's contest with two shots on target including the game winner in 46 minutes on the pitch in her first start of the campaign.

For Liljegren, the assist was the first in her career at SEMO as she made her second-straight start of the season.

Illinois Springfield held a slight edge in shots 9-8 after the opening half.

The Redhawks then ramped up the pressure in the second period, outshooting the Prairie Stars, 10-3.

Koerner, a freshman forward from Mahomet, Illinois, paced SEMO with five shots (2 SOG) over 52 minutes Sunday.

She saw a pair of shots just miss the net wide in the 75th and 76th minutes before increasing the SEMO margin to 2-0 off a feed from Megan Heisserer at 79:18.

The goal was the first in Koerner's career as a Redhawk. She made her second-straight career start Sunday.

For Heisserer, the point was her first since her freshman season in 2019, after she missed the 2021 campaign due to a season-ending injury suffered in 2020-21.

Heisserer, a redshirt junior from Scott City, Missouri, also redirected a corner kick with a header on frame two minutes prior to setting up Koerner's insurance goal.

Heisserer finished with two shots (1 SOG) to go along with her helper in 20 minutes of action.

Freshman goalkeeper Sophia Elfrink earned her first career shutout Sunday. The Columbia, Missouri, native, finished with five saves in her second-straight career start as a Redhawk.

Mirimanian made eight saves for UIS in the loss.

SEMO outshot UIS, 18-12, and finished with a shots on goal advantage Sunday of 10-5.

Natalie Jackson added a pair of shots on goal and competed in the full 90 minutes for the second-straight game.

Mariah Mannino also didn't leave the pitch for the second-straight contest, chipping in a shot on target.

Morgan McCourt posted three shots (1 SOG) in 31 minutes of action off the bench.

Navi Washington and Macie Hockett both made their Redhawk debuts Sunday while Taylor Nelson and Natalie Miller both made their 2022 season debuts.

Ella Baldwin made her first career start on defense, tallying a shot in 63 minutes.

St. Charles, Missouri, freshmen Alayna Jakul, and Zoe Houston both made their second-straight career starts Sunday.

The Redhawks next head to Missouri State on Thursday in Springfield, Missouri. First kick is 2 p.m., CT. SEMO then hosts Columbia College (Mo.) on Sunday, Aug. 28 at Houck Field with kick off set for 6 p.m., CT.
