Redhawks Sweep in Second-Straight Day of Purple & Gold Challenge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri (9-6) swept in the second-straight day of the Lipscomb Purple & Gold Challenge Saturday. The Redhawks beat College of Charleston (5-14), 3-2, and defeated Dayton (3-11), 10-6.

A run that SEMO scored without getting a hit in the bottom of the third inning loomed large in the end in its one-run victory over CofC.

The Redhawks were hitless through the first three innings of the game, but manufactured an important run in the the third. Kynzie Wrigley walked, went to second on a groundout and took third on a wild pitch before scoring the game's first tally on a sacrifice fly by Sydney Dennis.

An inning later, SEMO tacked on two more runs. Kileigh Grisham touched home on a sacrifice fly by Paige Halliwill and Aubrie Shore scored on a wild pitch to push the Redhawks lead to 3-0.

The Cougars answered with two unearned runs courtesy of a SEMO error to make it a 3-2 ballgame in the top of the fifth inning.

After coming up empty with the bases loaded during its at-bat in the fifth, CofC got the tying run on first. However, Paytience Holman abruptly ended any threat of a comeback when she recorded back-to-back strikeouts en route to her first save of the season.

Holman, who returned from injury at this weekend's tournament, threw a complete game victory and picked up a save in her first two pitching appearances.

Marisa Davis (1-1) was credited with the win, her first of 2022. Davis scattered four hits, allowed two runs, struck out three and walked one in five innings of work.

Holman relieved Davis in the sixth and struck out three of the seven hitters she faced.

CofC (4) and SEMO (3) combined for just seven hits. Kaylee Anderson, Karsyn Davis and Shore each singled for the Redhawks.

SEMO erupted for nine runs in the fifth inning to pick up its win over UD in the nightcap.

Down, 4-1, the Flyers fell apart defensively committing three errors that led nine unearned runs. Shore also hit a three-RBI double, Anderson delivered a two-RBI single and both Alyson Tucker and Tatum Gerwitz added run-scoring hits to give the Redhawks a 10-4 advantage.

The Flyers never recovered after that as SEMO went on to sweep its second day of play in the tournament.

Anderson went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI, and Tucker was 2-for-3 with two runs.

Rachel Rook (6-3) tossed her sixth complete game. Rook struck out eight, walked three and gave up six runs on seven hits.

SEMO, which is on a four-game winning streak, faces Lipscomb in its final game of the Purple & Gold Challenge Sunday.
