#4 Redhawks Fall to #5 Lindenwood in Penalty Kicks Sunday in 2022 OVC Championship Quarterfinals

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Fourth seeded Southeast Missouri women's soccer (8-6-3, 4-2-2 OVC) drew with #5 Lindenwood (6-7-6, 2-2-4 OVC), 1-1, in the 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Championship Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon at Houck Field. After a pair of overtime periods, the visiting Lions edged SEMO, 2-0, in penalty kicks.
 
Lindenwood will now face #1 Tennessee Tech in the 2022 OVC Soccer Championship Tournament Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4 on the campus of TTU in Cookeville, Tennessee.
 
The Redhawks outshot the Lions, 29-2 (15-1 SOG) before heading to a penalty shootout. SEMO's 29 shots were a season best. 
 
In the shootout, SEMO missed all four of its attempts while Lindenwood made its second and third tries.
 
Jacqueline Baetz and Jill Wipke scored in back-to-back rounds to claim the victory after Eyglo Thorsteinsdottir missed her attempt in the first round. 
 
SEMO took an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute Sunday. 
 
Cayla Koerner, the 2022 OVC goals (6) leader, found Emma Tucker who buried a shot from distance in the top of the net past Sam Blazek. 
 
For Tucker, a sophomore midfielder from Wentzville, Missouri, the goal was the first of her career at SEMO. 
 
The assist for Koerner, a freshman from Mahomet, Illinois, was her first as a Redhawk as she increased her points total to 15 (7g-1a) in 2022. 
 
The Lions would then even the game at 1-1 on a converted penalty kick at 34:40. SEMO was called for a foul in the box before Baetz beat goalkeeper Sophia Elfrink to knot the contest at 1-1.
 
The Redhawks would then outshoot Lindenwood, 14-1, in the second half and 3-0 in the overtime periods but couldn't find the back of the net. 
 
Koerner led SEMO Sunday with five shots (2 SOG) while Faith Liljegren (3 SOG) and Alayna Jakul each added (1 SOG) a career-best four shots each. 
 
Zoe Houston and Elizabeth Rater each finished with three shots (1 SOG) while Zoey Memmel (1 SOG), Tucker (2 SOG), Emma Brune and Natalie Jackson (2 SOG) each chipped in two. 
 
Lily Sutter and Baetz combined for both of the Lions shots. 
 
Houston, Jackson, Brune and Koerner all took penalty kicks following overtime Sunday. 
 
Six Redhawks competed in 100 or more minutes Sunday including Liljegren (100), Maddie Paulson (103) and Mariah Mannino (106).
 
Elfrink, Brune, and Jackson all competed in the full 110 minutes Sunday. 
 
Elfrink played in all 1,550 minutes in net for the Redhawks in 2022.
 
Brune competed in her 15-straight full regulation game in 2022 (16 in 2022) and led SEMO field players with 1,542 minutes this season.
 
For Jackson, it was her 16th full regulation game of the season.
 
Thorsteinsdottir was assessed a yellow card in the 48th minute. 
 
Blazek made 14 saves for Lindenwood Sunday. 
 
SEMO led the corner kicks category, 8-3. 
 
The Redhawks conclude the 2022 campaign with an 8-6-3 mark (4-2-2 OVC). 
 
SEMO's eight wins are the most in the past three seasons. The Redhawks have now won seven or more games each of the past four campaigns.
 
The Redhawks made their 21st all-time appearance in the OVC Tournament Sunday and sixth-straight appearance. 
 
Sunday marked the first time SEMO hosted the OVC Quarterfinals since 2014.
