Redhawks Comeback Falls Short in Series Opener at Lindenwood Thursday

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Three Redhawks finished in double-digits attacking as Southeast Missouri women's volleyball's (11-14,6-7 OVC) five-set (23-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-14, 13-15) comeback fell short against Lindenwood (8-14, 5-8 OVC) Thursday night at Hyland Arena. 
 
After dropping the opening two sets Thursday, SEMO answered with two-straight set victories to knot the match at 2-2 and force a decisive fifth and final period. 
 
In the fifth set, the Lions jumped out to a 6-3 lead that grew to 11-4 after a 5-0 run. 
 
Zoey Beasley registered a kill before teaming up with Lexie Smith for a block to cut the margin to 12-7.
 
The Redhawks then utilized a 5-0 run to come within a point, 14-13. Colby Greene notched consecutive kills before a Kalia Morris ace. Greene added another rally stopper before another Morris ace as SEMO continued to fend off match. 
 
Greene had four kills in the fifth set and finished Thursday with a team-best 15 on a .406 clip with seven digs and an assist. 
 
Morris notched three service aces to go with four digs. 
 
Mackenzi Sifuentes then hit her match-high and career-best 24th kill to seal the win for Lindenwood. 
 
Trailing the match 2-0, SEMO evened the contest with a 25-21 third set followed by a dominating 25-14 fourth stanza. 
 
The Redhawks hit a match-high .250 in the first and third sets Thursday. 
 
SEMO notched a 4-0 run to take an early 8-4 lead in the third frame. Kayla Closset opened the sequence with a kill before a block by Kaelyn O'Brien and Mackenzie Meehan, book ended by a Beasley rally stopper.
 
Greene and Closset then added consecutive kills to make the score 14-10.
 
Closset had five kills in the third set and concluded the evening with 14 kills and 17 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. 
 
SEMO then went on a 3-0 run to widen the gap to 17-12. 
 
O'Brien slammed a kill before a Tara Beilsmith ace increased the lead to 19-13. 
 
The Lions would cut the edge to 21-20 after three-straight points before SEMO secured the set on a 3-0 run (25-21). Greene notched a kill before an Izzy Lukens ace and then a Lindenwood error. 
 
The fourth set was all Redhawks. SEMO commenced with an 8-2 lead that prompted a Lions timeout. 
 
A 6-0 run by SEMO made it a 10-point lead (14-4). Greene and Smith then combined for a block assist to make the score 22-12. 
 
The Redhawks would then wrap the set with kills by Closset and Meehan following a Lions service error to even the match at 2-2 after a 25-14 set. 
 
Lindenwood hit a match-low -.023 in the stanza. 
 
The Lions though took the first two sets Thursday, hitting .300 plus in both (.325 and .310).
 
LU opened the match with an 8-4 lead that SEMO trimmed to 9-8 after a trio of kills. 
 
The Redhawks then went on a 4-0 to go up 12-10 and had a 15-13 lead at the media stoppage. 
 
Following the media break, Lindenwood earned some breathing room, 19-15, after a 6-0 rally. 
 
A kill by Taylor Gentemann made the Lions lead 23-19 as SEMO came within one, 23-22. 
 
Gentemann added another rally stopper for set point before Greene notched a kill to keep the lead at one, 24-23. 
 
Sifuentes then connected on a kill for a 1-0 Lindenwood advantage in the match. 
 
Greene had five kills in the initial set on a .625 rate while Closset and Beasley each added three. 
 
In the second set, the Redhawks registered a 5-0 rally for a slight 15-13 lead at the media timeout. 
 
Beilsmith then posted an ace following a Lions service error to knot the set at 18-18. Closset would connect on a pair of kills to keep the set all square at 19-19 and then 20-20.
 
Beasley added a solo block to tie the set at 21-21. 
 
A kill from Nyah Wilson followed by a SEMO error then shifted the lead in favor of the home side, 23-21. 
 
The Redhawks would get one more point off a Lions error before kills by Rebecca Janke and Madilyn Dement pushed the Lindenwood lead to 2-0 (25-22 second set). 
 
Beasley compiled 11 kills with four blocks and a dig Thursday. O'Brien added eight kills, 18 assists, and seven digs.
 
Meehan had seven kills, hitting .429 with three blocks and three digs. 
 
Lukens dished out 22 assists with 15 digs and two aces. She now has 500 plus assists (519) in her career.
 
Beilsmith, the six-time Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week in 2022 from Weldon Spring, Missouri, notched her second career double-double with 27 digs, a career-best matching 10 assists and two aces. 
 
Beilsmith surpassed 400 career assists (406) in the match.
 
Addy McAleer chipped in seven digs Thursday. 
 
Smith registered two blocks and a kill, coming off the bench in the third set. 
 
Lindenwood outhit SEMO, .203 to .187. 
 
Dement (13 kills and 17 digs) and Wilson (12 kills and 12 kills) both had double-doubles Thursday. 
 
Abby VanBuskirk had a match-high 47 assists and 13 digs. Jesse Seidel grabbed 20 digs with six assists as the Lions had four players with 10-plus digs.
 
Thursday marked the first-ever meeting between the two Missouri schools as Lindenwood most recently jumped up to the NCAA Division I level and joined the OVC this past July. 
 
SEMO and Lindenwood conclude the series Friday at 5 p.m., CT at Hyland Arena.
