EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Zoey Beasley registered a match-high 18 kills to lead Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (10-10, 5-3 OVC) to a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) of Ohio Valley Conference newcomer, Southern Indiana (1-18, 1-7 OVC), Friday evening at Screaming Eagles Arena.
Beasley, a senior outside hitter from Paragould, Arkansas, led the SEMO offense with 18 kills with six digs on a .333 hitting percentage as the Redhawks picked up their second-straight 3-0 sweep (sixth in 2022, fourth in OVC play). She registered nine kills in the second set and finished the match with six in the third stanza.
Kaelyn O'Brien added nine kills (.250) with 16 assists, five digs and an ace.
Mackenzie Meehan finished with a career-high eight kills on a .615 clip.
SEMO opened the match with a 5-3 lead after a 4-0 run. Consecutive kills by
Colby Greene followed by a winner from
Ramiri Gardner put the advantage at 8-4.
A kill from Meehan followed by a Screaming Eagle miscue made the score 15-10 before USI went on a 6-0 run to shift the lead in its favor, 16-15.
Closset belted a kill to even the set at 17-17 before SEMO widened the gap to 21-19 after a 4-0 rally. Meehan opened the sequence with a winner before a kill by O'Brien and an ace from
Izzy Lukens.
O'Brien opened the match with four kills on a .333 rate in set #1. Gardner (1.000), Closset, Beasley, and Meehan (.600) each had three.
The Redhawks then claimed the set with four of the final five points, 25-21. Beasley and Gardner compiled consecutive kills to wrap the period.
SEMO hit a match high .390 in the first set and finished Friday with .295.
The Redhawks then commenced the second stanza leading 5-2 before a Beasley kill doubled the advantage to 6-3.
The Screaming Eagles then utilized a 6-0 run to pull ahead 9-6. USI added another run, this time 4-0, for a 14-10 lead.
SEMO then scored the next three points before Southern Indiana went to the media stoppage up 15-13.
Out of the break, Beasley connected on consecutive kills and had three during a 4-0 run to make the SEMO edge 17-15.
USI retied the set at 17-17 after kills from Leah Anderson and Carly Sobieralski before SEMO increased its advantage in the match to 2-0, ending the set on an 8-1 run (25-18).
SEMO then jumped out to a 7-3 lead in set #3.
Beasley added back-to-back kills to prompt a USI timeout at 13-9.
Greene then blasted a rally stopper from the rightside position before a Screaming Eagle ball handling error made the score 18-13.
SEMO would bring on match point at 24-19 after a 5-1 run.
USI would fend off match point three times to cut the margin to 24-22 before the Redhawks claimed the match. The Screaming Eagles compiled a hitting percentage of .268 in the third set and finished Friday with .194.
Closset chipped in six kills (.286) with 11 digs while Greene and Gardner both added four kills.
Lukens dished out 19 assists with eight digs and an ace.
Tara Beilsmith, the reigning back-to-back OVC Defensive Player of the Week, grabbed a match-best 19 digs and six assists.
Addy McAleer finished with four digs.
USI led the aces and blocks categories Friday, 4-2, in each.
Abby Bednar led the Screaming Eagles with 10 kills and 13 digs. Sobieralski tallied 26 assists with five digs.
Abby Weber finished with 15 digs and six kills while Keira Moore added 13 digs.
Friday marked the first meeting between the two schools as members of the Ohio Valley Conference and at the NCAA Division I level.
