Redhawks Sweep UT Martin, Exceed 20 Ohio Valley Conference Wins

MARTIN, Tenn. – Ohio Valley Conference leader Southeast Missouri (26-14, 21-5) went over 20 conference wins when it swept UT Martin (25-18, 14-14), 3-1, 8-0, in a doubleheader Wednesday.
SEMO, which has won five in a row, is now two conference victories away from breaking a program record. The present record for most OVC wins in a season stands at 22 by both the 1995 (22-4) and 1996 (22-2) teams.
SEMO pulled ahead early scoring once in each of the first two innings.
Rachel Anderson, after reaching on a bunt single, scored on a two-out single by Katie Dreiling in the top of the first.
Kaylee Anderson led off the second inning with a solo home run to left field to give the Redhawks a 2-0 advantage. The home run was Anderson's ninth of the season.
The Redhawks added another run in the top of the fifth inning when Katie Dreiling reached on a two-out error and touched home on an ensuing triple by R. Anderson. The 31st triple of R. Anderson's career pushed SEMO's lead to 3-0.
Shyanne Sheffield gave UTM its only run of the game with her solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
R. Anderson went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead SEMO which had five hits.
Rachel Rook (17-8) went the distance with eight strikeouts. Rook allowed just one run on four hits and tossed her 12th complete game of the season.
Ashley Ellis hit a grand slam and Paytience Holman threw a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts to lead SEMO in the nightcap.
Ellis came up with the bases loaded and no outs in the first inning and launched her team-high 17th home run over the center field wall. Ellis tied her own single-season home run record she set in 2019. The grand slam was the second of Ellis' career, as well.
SEMO put up two more runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to bury the Skyhawks for good.
Ellis reached on a fielder's choice and both Jillian Anderson and Kynzie Wrigley scored in the fifth. An inning later, Wrigley knocked in Kelby Robinson and Abigail Rickermann on a two-out double to left center.
Holman (7-6) twirled her fourth shutout and fifth complete game of the season. She allowed just four hits and one walk in six sparkling innings.
Wrigley went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Ellis added five RBI and a run. J. Anderson also scored twice for the Redhawks.
SEMO, which posted its 12th shutout victory, closes out its regular season with a three-game series at Jacksonville State on May 8-9.
