#3 Redhawks Fall to #2 Jacksonville State Thursday in 2020-21 OVC Championship Semifinals

MOREHEAD, Ky. – No. 3-seeded Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (14-3) fell to #2 Jacksonville State (16-1), 25-23, 26-24, 25-18, Thursday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2020-21 Ohio Valley Conference Championship held at Johnson Arena.
 
SEMO concludes the 2020-21 campaign with a mark of 14-3.
 
2020-21 First-Team All-OVC honoree Laney Malloy led the Redhawks with seven kills and 12 digs. Colby Greene, Talia Gouard (.429 hitting percentage) and Zoey Beasley each chipped in six kills.
 
Claire Ochs who was also named to the 2020-21 First-Team All-OVC dished out 25 assists with four kills and three digs.

Ochs was selected to the 2020-21 OVC Championship All-Tournament Team for the second-straight season Friday after the Championship final between #1 Morehead State and #2 JSU. 
 
Jacksonville State jumped out to an 11-5 advantage in the opening set and grew its lead to 18-11.
 
Trailing 19-13, SEMO went on a 4-0 run to pull within two. Malloy blasted a kill and Ochs placed an ace to start the rally.
 
The Redhawks continued to chip away at the deficit, making the scoreboard read 22-20 Jacksonville State after a Beasley and Adams block assist.
 
A SEMO attack error gave the Gamecocks set point at 24-20. The Redhawks would fend off set point three times with kills from Greene and Beasley coupled with a JSU miscue before the Gamecocks took the set.
 
The second set started as a back and forth affair in the race to 10 points.
 
Gouard connected on a rally stopper to make the score 12-11 in favor of JSU. The Gamecocks held a slight 15-12 edge at the media timeout.
 
Kills from Courtney Glotzbach, the 2020-21 OVC Freshman of the Year, and Sadie Brown provided the Gamecocks a 21-17 lead.
 
Beasley then posted a kill followed by her first career service ace to cut into the JSU lead, 22-20.
 
The Redhawks evened the stanza at 23-23 after a 3-0 run. Malloy connected on a pair of kills to bookend a JSU attack error.
 
With the Gamecocks at set point, SEMO tied the frame at 24-24 after a Gamecocks error before JSU took the set 26-24.
 
Jacksonville State opened the third set with a 5-0 lead that extended to 11-6.
 
SEMO then cut the Gamecocks lead to one, 14-13, after a 4-0 run. Greene opened the rally with a kill, Malloy posted an ace and Adams tallied a rally stopper.
 
JSU widened its margin to 18-14. Greene then knocked a kill to pull SEMO within three.
 
SEMO would come as close as 24-18 after a kill from Malloy before Brown knocked a kill to seal the semifinals victory.
 
Ally Dion posted eight digs and three assists. Kayla Closset added six digs.
 
Aces finished tied at 3-3. Malloy, Beasley and Ochs each recorded one Thursday.
 
SEMO held a slight edge in blocks, 6-5.
 
Adams paced SEMO with three blocks and two kills in her final career match as a Redhawk. Beasley, Greene and Gouard each tallied two blocks.
 
SEMO finished with a hitting percentage of .162 compared to JSU's .269. The Gamecocks steadily improved all match hitting with a rate of .278 in the second set and a match-high .366 in the final frame.
 
Lena Kindermann, the 2020-21 OVC Co-Player of the Year, led the Gamecocks attack with 18 kills. Lexie Libs, the back-to-back OVC Setter of the Year, finished with 41 assists and 11 digs. Erin Carmichael had 16 digs.
 
#2 Jacksonville State will next face top-seeded Morehead State Friday in the 2020-21 OVC Championship Final at 5 p.m., CT.
