CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's basketball defeated William Woods, 66-49, in exhibition play Monday evening at the Show Me Center.
Freshman
Jaliyah Green led the Redhawks with 16 points to go with five rebounds and
Deanay Watson chipped in 13 points hauling down eight rebounds.
Roshala Scott added nine points and
Shymaryia Christopher finished with seven.
SEMO went to the break with a slight 31-25 advantage before utilizing a 19-point third quarter to widen the gap.
The Redhawks went on an 8-1 run to finish the third quarter.
Taelour Pruitt opened the sequence with a lay-up at 3:51. Watson then registered consecutive buckets to make it a double-digit lead of 50-36.
SEMO would increase its margin to 21 (60-39) with 5:36 remaining in regulation after a pair of free throws by Watson.
Green converted a bucket before hitting a 3-pointer to make the score 55-39.
She finished 7-for-10 on field goals including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.
Chandler Davis then swished a trey to push the advantage to 58-39.
SEMO shot at a rate of 38 percent behind a 48 percent second half and 57 percent third frame. William Woods finished with a clip of 29 percent.
The Redhawks scored 30 points in the paint and converted 24 off turnovers. SEMO scored 18 points off fast break opportunities.
SEMO shot 20-for-25 from the charity stripe and was 84.6 percent in the opening half.
Seven SEMO student-athletes suited up in Redhawks gear for the first time Monday. Green,
Kennedi Watkins and
Johné Stewart were featured in the starting lineup.
Christopher, Davis,
Halle Smith and
Kori Tomlin also made their first career appearances for SEMO.
Smith led SEMO with 26 minutes on the court, tallying six rebounds, four points and two blocks.
Sydney Booker led the Owls with 10 points and 10 boards for the double-double.
The Redhawks held a 45-39 edge in rebounds.
SEMO next opens its 2021-22 regular-season against the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (St. Louis) on Nov. 9. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m., CT at the Show Me Center.
