IOWA CITY, Iowa – Myroslava Zelenchuk captured the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Women's Central Regional Singles Main Consolation Championship Sunday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis Recreation Complex.
Zelenchuk, a freshman from Lviv, Ukraine, is the first Redhawk in program history to secure an ITA regional singles title.
Sunday in the Championship final, Zelenchuk battled past Ioana Gheorghita, the #2 seed from Kansas State, 6-2, 0-6, 10-8, for the title.
Zelenchuk fought past Nebraska's Jillian Roa, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, Sunday morning in the semifinals to secure a berth in the championship final.
Zelenchuk opened the consolation bracket with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Katherine Krueger of Creighton in the round of 32s Friday. Zelenchuk then beat Emily Surcey of Arkansas State, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 16s Saturday.
Zelenchuk advanced to the quarterfinals where she met Ekin Ercetin of Minnesota. Zelenchuk cruised past Ercetin, 6-4, 6-2.
Romana Tarajova's run in the main ITA Central Regional Singles draw concluded Sunday in the quarterfinals. Tarajova fell to top-seeded Thasaporn Naklo of Iowa State, 6-1, 6-1, Sunday morning.
Tarajova, a senior from Dolný Kubín, Slovakia, has progressed the farthest out of any Southeast Missouri women's tennis player at the fall ITA Regional tournament.
SEMO next concludes its fall season at Murray State's MSU Invitational Nov. 5-6 in Murray, Kentucky.
