Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Redhawks Fall at SIUE, 3-1, Thursday

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Southeast Missouri women's soccer (5-9-1, 2-4-1 OVC) fell at SIUE (8-6-0, 5-2-0 OVC) Thursday evening at Ralph Korte Stadium.
 
Elizabeth Rater evened the contest with her team-high third goal of the season before the Cougars scored two unanswered goals for the win.
 
SIUE struck first with a goal by Maria Haro in the seventh minute.
 
Lauren Welker had a chance in the 10th minute off a feed from Morgan McCourt but sent the shot high.
 
Redhawks goalkeeper Bailey Redden kept it a one-score game with a diving save five minutes later. Redden dove to stop a header by Andrea Frerker.
 
Frerker led SIUE with two shots on goals and finished with three total shots.
 
Rater then knotted the game at 1-1 with her third career goal and second in Ohio Valley Conference play. She played in 75 minutes Thursday.
 
Rater, a 5-11 freshman from Mequon, Wisconsin, headed a set piece past Jensen Schoch in the 16th minute.
 
Lexi Grote provided the service before Rater registered her second header in 2021. For Grote, it was her first point of the season and fourth career assist.
 
Grote played in 80 minutes on defense in her 78th career game as a Redhawk. She is now tied for third in SEMO program history with Megan Hejlek (2002-05), Jessi Wuellner (2003-06) and Lauren Kaempfe (2015-18) for career games played.
 
The Cougars grabbed a 2-1 advantage with seven seconds remaining in the opening period. Kaitlyn Nichols registered the goal for SIUE at 44:53.
 
SIUE outshot the Redhawks, 6-2, in the opening half. The Cougars concluded the game with a 15-5 advantage in shots including 9-3 in the final half. Shots on goal favored SIUE, 7-3.
 
Redden had two saves in the first frame and finished with four.
 
Schoch finished with a save in the win.
 
SEMO had two prime scoring opportunities in the 65th and 66th minutes of play during the second half. Mariah Johnson jumped up into the play from the defensive end for a shot that was saved by the SIUE defense before McCourt headed a cross on target.
 
Johnson was assessed a pair of yellow cards in the second half. She was first booked at 47:16 before committing her second offense at 68:06, which resulted in a red card.
 
SEMO played the remaining 21 minutes down a player with 10 after Johnson was disqualified.
 
Mackenzie Litzsinger was also given a yellow card in the 69th minute after a hard tackle.
 
Lily Schnieders hit the woodwork at 68:27, nearly increasing the SIUE lead.
 
The Cougars then added an insurance goal at 83:28 by Kayla Klipsch to make the score 3-1.
 
SIUE held a slight advantage in corner kicks, 4-3, with each team earning three opportunities in the second half.
 
Schnieders and Haro each had three shots for the Cougars.
 
Emma Brune and Natalie Jackson both played in the full 90 minutes for SEMO.
 
For Brune, it was her fourth-straight full regulation game and 14th in 2021. Jackson extended her streak of playing every minute to nine games.
 
Myah Diekema played in the total 90 for SIUE.
 
Hannah Compernolle played in 19 minutes in her 80th career game to move to first in SEMO program history for games played. The fifth-year senior from Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, entered the game tied for first in the Redhawk record books with Lisa Schweppe (2002-2005, 79) for career games played.
 
The Redhawks next return to Cape Girardeau for Senior Day Sunday against Tennessee Tech. Initial kick is slated for 1 p.m. at Houck Field.
 
SEMO will recognize seniors Bailey Redden, Abby Rollet, Lauren Welker, Hannah Compernolle, Abby Tremain, Kate Daus and Lexi Grote prior to the game Sunday.
