MOREHEAD, Ky. – LaTrese Saine nearly registered a triple-double outing as Southeast Missouri women's basketball (7-5, 5-2 OVC) fell at Morehead State (5-8, 4-5 OVC), 58-57, Thursday at Johnson Arena.
Saine finished with a career-best 19 points to accompany 14 rebounds and nine blocks. She was 7-for-17 from the field and 2-for-3 behind the arc in 38 minutes of court time after a 12-point first half.
The loss snapped SEMO's five-game Ohio Valley Conference win streak.
Trailing 54-49, with 7:04 left to play, the Redhawks utilized a 6-1 run to knot the contest at 55-55. After a Tyler Moore 3-pointer,
Tesia Thompson tallied a bucket to start the comeback.
Saine then added a jumper after an Ellie Jo Johnson free throw with less than five minutes remaining in regulation to pull SEMO within a basket, 55-53.
Thompson split a pair of free throws twice on consecutive Redhawks' possessions to tie the ballgame at 55-55 at the 2:41 mark.
SEMO then retied the game at 57-57 after a pair of free throws from Saine with 55 ticks left on the clock. Saine finished the day 3-for-6 from the charity stripe.
After a Redhawks timeout, Lauren Carter made one of two free throws to provide the Eagles a 58-57 advantage.
With 35 seconds left in the contest, SEMO had opportunities to tie or capture the lead with multiple trips to the free throw line coupled with multiple missed baskets. The Redhawks shot 33.3 percent from the field (20-60) and 12-for-21 on free throws (57.1 percent) in the game.
The Redhawks jumped out to a 21-15 lead before Morehead State outscored SEMO, 43-36 in the final three quarters.
Sophie Bussard's three-point play with 5:00 left in the opening quarter was SEMO's largest lead of eight Thursday.
Thompson compiled 17 points in the contest with eight boards and two steals after a 14-point second half. She shot 6-for-18 and hit one of her three trey attempts. Thompson finished 4-for-8 at the charity stripe after entering the tilt perfect at 17-17 the past two games.
Bussard chipped in eight points and
Roshala Scott had six. Both concluded with five rebounds apiece.
Ariel Kirkwood paced the Eagles with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Tyler Moore poured in 14 points.
SEMO completes its trip to the Bluegrass State with a Saturday matchup against Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Kentucky. Tip-off against the Colonels is set for 12 p.m., CT at McBrayer Arena.
