CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast MIssouri's 2020 Athletics Hall of Fame Class has been set. This year's class includes Lance Brune, Edgar Jones, Sherry Mitchell, Lana Richmond, Lorenz "Red" Williams and the 1986-87 Women's Basketball team.
Lance Brune, Football (1970-1973)
Lance Brune was a four-year varsity letterman at SEMO, where he started at quarterback from 1970-73. Brune, at one time during his career, set or tied seven school records. He finished his career with 4,808 passing yards, 4,861 yards of total offense and 30 touchdown passes. Brune also posted game records of 301 passing yards and four passing touchdowns. In addition, he had 77 passing first downs in 1973. His 1,273 passing yards were the most by a freshman in school history. Brune finished the 1973 season ranked eighth in the nation in total offense with 184.7 yards per game. He ranked seventh in the nation with 1,819 passing yards that year, as well. Brune was a First-Team All-Conference, Most Valuable Player of the MIAA and KFVS 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 1973. A year later, he signed as a free agent with the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals. Brune played three games in the preseason with the Cardinals, including the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.
Edgar Jones, Football (2003-2006)
Edgar Jones was a First-Team Associated Press and Second-Team Sporting News All-American following his senior season at SEMO. Jones led all of Division I-AA with 12 quarterback sacks and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Magnolia Gridiron Classic. He earned First-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors in 2006. Jones finished his career ranked second among the school's career leaders in sacks (16.0) and tied for 11th in tackles for loss (24.0). Jones also set SEMO's single-season record with 12.0 sacks in 2006. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 2007 and played five seasons with the Ravens from 2007-2011. Jones also played with the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys. In all, he played 64 NFL games, including 41 with Baltimore, seven with Dallas and 16 with Kansas City. He was also with the Cleveland Browns prior to his retirement.
Sherry Mitchell, Women's Basketball (1987-91)
Sherry Mitchell claimed All-MIAA honors in all four of her years at SEMO. Mitchell was an honorable mention All-MIAA pick in both 1988 and 1990, a second-team selection in 1989 and a first-team pick in 1991. She holds SEMO's all-time career records in games played (123), assists (639) and steals (335). Mitchell owns the school's single-season records in both assists (232, 1990-91) and steals (114, 1988-89). Scoring wise, Mitchell accumulated 1,398 points in her career, which stand fifth all-time in program history. She also ranks tied for 10th in career rebounds with a total of 667. Mitchell was part of teams that won two MIAA regular-season titles and one MIAA Tournament crown. She played in the NCAA Division II Tournament all four years and made the NCAA Tournament finals with her 1990-91 team.
Lana Richmond, Softball Coach (1982-2014)
Lana Richmond coached the SEMO softball program for 32 years, compiling an 884-710-4 record from 1982 to 2014. Her teams won five Ohio Valley Conference regular-season titles (1995-1999), five OVC Tournament titles and made five NCAA Tournament appearances. The program had only two scholarships when she took over but, nine years later, the 1991 team made the school's first-ever NCAA semifinal. Four of the national tournament berths came while Southeast Missouri played in NCAA Division II. In three decades, the OVC's winningest coach oversaw nine All-Americans, 37 first-team all-conference selections, four OVC Player of the Year honorees, three OVC Pitcher of the Year winners and one OVC Freshman of the Year. In the program's first 10 years in D-II in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, the team made NCAA Tournament appearances in 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1991. The 1986 team finished with a school-record 40 wins, and Richmond was the D-II Regional Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1991. Her program had 30 or more wins in 10 of its Division I seasons. Richmond became the 42nd softball coach in NCAA history to reach 800 career wins, doing so in 2010. Her 600th D-I victory came in 2013. Richmond's teams also were consistently recognized in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association academic rankings, with her team ranked in the Top 10 for six consecutive years and the 2002 team recognized with the nation's second-highest GPA.
Lorenz C. "Red" Williams, Athletic Trainer (1967-83), Deceased
Lorenz C. "Red" Williams was SEMO's first full-time athletic trainer. Williams worked in that position for 16 years supporting nine men and women's athletic teams. He mentored and supervised 63 athletic training students during his tenure and was awarded National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) honors for both 20 years and 25 years of service. Williams was inducted into the Missouri Sports and Missouri Sports Medicine Athletic Trainer Halls of Fame. He hosted the first Cramer Student Clinic at SEMO and was a speaker for numerous coaching and injury clinics in the Southeast MIssouri area. Williams was a Charter member of the State High School Activity Association Sports Medicine Committee and served as a consultant to area high schools on athletic injuries. He initiated an extensive rehabilitative program for faculty and students at SEMO following his own illnesses, which led to his retirement from his full-time position as athletic trainer. Williams was a Physical Education Instructor during his career at SEMO, as well.
1986-87 Women's Basketball Team
The 1986-1987 SEMO women's basketball team put together an overall record of 26-4, won the program's first outright Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) title with a 13-1 mark and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament. SEMO had a 13-game winning streak from Jan. 7-Feb. 11 that year. The 1986-87 team won the school's first-ever MIAA Tournament crown after beating both then-Missouri-Rolla (76-64) and Cental Missouri (78-55). Ed Arnzen was named the MIAA Coach of the Year, while Sandy Heitschmidt (first-team), Pat Colon (second-team), Stephanie Williams (honorable mention) and Sherri Shirrell (honorable mention) earned All-MIAA honors. The 1986-87 team was ranked third in NCAA Division II, Head Coach: Ed Arnzen. Assistant Coaches: Alicia Polson, Brenna Kelly. Players: Pat Colon, Anne Cook, Michelle Daniel, Sandy Heitschmidt, Michelle Horneker, Angela James, Vicki Lohmann, Jill Pizzotti, Vera Roberts, Sherri Shirrell, Stephanie Williams.
