MONTGOMERY, Ala.– Southeast Missouri (5-1) kept its winning streak intact with two victories during the opening day of the Stinger Classic Friday. The Redhawks beat South Carolina State (0-5), 16-3, and tournament host Alabama State (5-7), 12-3.
SEMO has won each of its last five games this young 2020 season.
The Redhawks scored six runs in the second inning to make light work of South Carolina State in game one.
Ahead, 1-0, after scoring an unearned run in the first, SEMO had a pair of triples and two two-run home runs to fuel its six-run second inning.
Ashley Emert hit a RBI-triple and
Kimmy Wallen scored a run off a bunt single.
Ashley Ellis and
Claudia Gallo each smashed two-run home runs to put the Redhawks ahead, 7-0.
SEMO added three more runs in the top of the third.
Austine Pauley knocked in a run on a single to left field and two errors led to a pair of unearned runs to make it 10-2 in favor of the Redhawks.
Kaylee Anderson ripped a two-RBI single and freshman
Keira Hance cleared the bases with a triple to extend SEMO's lead to 15-3 in the top of the fourth inning.
A RBI-single by
Leaha Wininger capped the scoring in the fifth.
SEMO outhit SCSU, 11-2, in the first meeting between the teams.
Ellis and Wallen each had two hits, while Pauley, Wininger, Gallo,
Rachel Anderson, K. Anderson, Hance and Emert followed with one apiece.
Alexis Estes (1-0) picked up her first win of the season. Estes allowed three runs and two hits in three innings.
SEMO then run-ruled tournament host ASU in six innings during the nightcap.
Clinging to a 4-3 lead, the Redhawks scored three runs in the fourth inning and never turned back.
R. Anderson scored
Rachael Donald on a sacrifice fly, Pauley stole home and Gallo scored on a single by Ellis.
Pauley hit a two-RBI double in the fifth inning and K. Anderson,
Addison Barnouski and Donald each delivered RBI-hits in the sixth to polish off the victory.
The Redhawks pounded out 15 hits with six players getting two or more.
Donald led the way with three hits, while Pauley, R. Anderson, Ellis,
Danina Marton and Barnouski added two each.
K. Anderson (3-0) registered her team-high third win of the season inside the circle.
SEMO resumes play at the Stinger Classic against Howard and Grambling State Saturday.
