LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (0-2) fell to Louisville (5-0) Sunday in a doubleheader held at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference bested the Redhawks 7-0 in the morning session before earning the doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 decision in the afternoon.
Louisville grabbed the doubles point to start both matches. Raven Neely and Maia Haumueller beat
Teona Velkoska and
Vivian Lai, 6-1, before Jelena Vujanic and Dina Chaika defeated
Lera Valeeva and
Manuela Barriga (SEMO) 6-2 in the first match.
Romana Tarajova, the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-OVC honoree, teamed up with
Kseniya Zonova for a tight battle at the top doubles spot. The duo who were both featured on the 2020 OVC Preseason Top 10 Players List were overcome by Rhea Verma and Andrea Di Palma, 7-6.
Manuela Barriga was beat by Diana Wong, 5-7, 2-6, in the sixth singles slot after Louisville had already took the first, third, fourth and fifth singles matches.
At the no. 2 position, Zonova captured the second set to force a decisive final set. Trailing a set, the senior from Kharkiv, Ukraine, forced a third set on Verma with a second set win. Verma captured the match with a 10-5 third set.
The afternoon match started the same as the former with Louisville earning the doubles point to begin the dual with a 1-0 advantage. Haumueller and Neely downed Tarajova and Zonova 6-1 at the top spot. Velkoska and Lai then fell to Verma and Di Palma, 3-6, at no. 2 doubles.
In singles, the Cardinals won matches at the third, second and fourth positions for the 4-0 victory.
Valeeva and Lai both made their Redhawks dual debuts on Sunday. Valeeva played doubles at the third position with Barriga while also competing in the third singles slot.
Lai was inserted at no. 2 doubles in the lineup with Velkoska and also played fourth singles.
Southeast next takes a short trip to Saint Louis to face the Billikens Wednesday at 12 p.m. at the St Clair Tennis Club.
