EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.– SIU Edwardsville (5-15, 2-5) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 84-65 victory over Southeast Missouri (4-16, 0-7) Thursday night at First Community Arena at the Vadalabene Center.
Another slow start hurt the Redhawks who suffered their 12th-straight loss against NCAA Division I foes.
SEMO secored a season-low 18 first-half points and trailed, 38-18, at halftime. The Redhawks were ahead for just 2:37 of the contest.
SIUE heated up to drain a 3-pointer on three-straight possessions and used an 11-0 run to open a 20-point (34-14) lead with under three minutes left.
SEMO shot just 21.7 percent from the field missing 18 of its 23 attempts in the first 20 minutes. The Redhawks also went just 1-of-10 from 3-point range with
DQ Nicholas knocking down their only trey of the first half.
SEMO won the second half, 47-46, but couldn't mount any sort of a comeback against a hot SIUE team that shot 56.3 percent (18-of-32) in the second half.
Alex Caldwell led SEMO with 15 points and had three of the team's eight 3-pointers.
Nicholas followed with 12 points and a team-high four rebounds.
Mike Adewunmi and Tyrese Williford topped SIUE with 23 and 22 points, respectively. Cam Williams added seven points and 10 rebounds, while Zeke Moore pitched in 14 points.
The Cougars outscored the Redhawks, 46-20, inside the paint.
SEMO completes its two-game Illinois road swing when it faces Eastern Illinois Saturday.
