CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.– Carlos Marshall scored a game-high 21 points and made the game-winning layup with six seconds left to lead Tennessee State (11-6, 3-1) to a 75-73 win over Southeast Missouri (4-13, 0-4) Saturday at the Show Me Center.
TSU erased a 16-point deficit and took a 73-71 lead on a Michael Littlejohn 3-pointer with 2:28 remaining.
Skyler Hogan made two free throws to tie the game with a little under two minutes to play.
After that, Littlejohn missed a 3-pointer. Marshall, however, grabbed the offensive rebound and made a layup to regain the lead for the Tigers.
SEMO didn't get a shot off in the final six seconds and TSU escaped.
The Redhawks, who led for 33:15, didn't make a field goal for the last 9:30 of the contest
SEMO put together a tremendous first half on both ends of the court.
The Redhawks heated up to shoot 51.5 percent (17-of-33) from the field and had eight players contribute points.
DQ Nicholas drained a 3-pointer to widen SEMO's lead to 39-23 wit 5:09 left in the first half before the Redhawks headed into the locker room ahead, 44-36.
SEMO managed to get another double-digit lead when
Alex Caldwell sunk a 3-pointer to make it a 68-58 game at the 9:30 mark of the second half.
A pair of TSU 3-pointers narrowed that margin to four as the Tigers clawed their way back.
Nicholas led SEMO with 16 points on 7-of-11 field goals. Caldwell followed with 15 points off the bench.
Quatarrius Wilson posted a near double-double nine points and eight rebounds.
For the game, SEMO shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) and buried eight 3-pointers. The Redhawks outrebounded TSU, 33-30, as well.
Marshall's game-high 21 points all came off the bench for TSU.
The Tigers won the second half by a score of 39-29 and forced eight second-half turnovers, including three in the opening minutes of the final stanza.
