COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (9-7, 1-1 OVC) grabbed the opening set on Tennessee Tech (5-10, 1-1 OVC), 25-13, before the Golden Eagles stormed back with three straight set wins to capture the match, 1-3 (25-13, 15-25, 25-27, 18-25), Saturday afternoon at the Hooper Eblen Center.
Laney Malloy led the Redhawks offense with 14 kills and 10 digs for her 20th career double-double.
Claire Ochs also registered a double-double of 34 assists and 15 digs.
Southeast jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match behind a .300 hitting percentage in the first set. Trailing, 7-5, the Redhawks went on a 12-1 run to pull away 16-7 in the first frame.
Malloy had four kills during the rally and paced the Redhawks with six in the first frame.
A kill from Emily Brooks cut the margin to 17-10 before a kill from
Mikayla Kuhlmann coupled with three Golden Eagles errors made the advantage 21-10.
Kuhlmann added two more kills before an
Ally Dion service ace sealed the set, 25-13. Kuhlmann posted four kills in the opening set and finished the match with seven.
Tennessee Tech then evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-15 second set win.
In the third set, TTU started with an 8-3 lead to prompt a Southeast timeout.
SEMO brought the lead in favor of the visiting team, 13-12, with a 4-0 run that featured a Malloy kill and a block assist from Malloy and
Maggie Adams.
Back-to-back service aces from Malloy then made the edge, 20-16.
Kuhlmann notched a kill and Ochs delivered an ace to push the lead to 23-19. A bad set from the Golden Eagles brought on set point, 24-23.
Adams then recorded a kill for the one point advantage, 25-24, before consecutive kills from Morgan Gish coupled with a Redhawks error gave TTU a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Golden Eagles earned their first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season with a 25-18 fourth set.
Talia Gouard blasted a rally stopper to pull SEMO within two, 16-14.
TTU then went on a 5-0 rally for a 21-14 edge.
Malloy,
Colby Greene and Kuhlmann each had kills down the stretch before Ali Verzani connected with her match high 23rd kill to complete the come from behind victory, 25-18.
Wehrheim totaled seven kills in the match.
Southeast out blocked TTU, 11-10. Adams compiled a season high of seven. Malloy and Wehrheim each chipped in three.
Tara Beilsmith led the Redhawks defensively with 24 digs and four assists.
Ally Dion added 13 and
Emily Boggetto had 10.
Southeast continues its road trip next Friday and Saturday at Austin Peay and Murray State. The Redhawks head to Austin Peay Friday, Oct. 4 for a 6 p.m. match before completing the trip at Murray State on Saturday, Oct. 5. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Murray, Kentucky.
