CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.– Austin Peay (11-10, 6-3) used a nine-run second inning to propel a 10-2 series-clinching victory over Southeast Missouri (13-11, 3-6) Sunday afternoon at Capaha Field.
SEMO dropped its third-straight series in Ohio Valley Conference play.
APSU put up nine runs on nine hits in its decisive second inning.
David Martinez led off with a home run and Malcolm Tipler singled. John McDonald followed with a double and Tipler scored. Matt Joslin and Bobby Head delivered RBI-hits ending the day for SEMO starter Daniel Bergtholdt.
Gino Avros greeted reliever
Austin Sachse with a bunt single and Parker Phillips then hit a grand slam with one out. Martinez came up again and hit his second home run, this time over the left field wall to give the Governors a 9-0 lead.
SEMO scored its only runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Danny Wright singled home
Connor Basler and
Tyler Wilber scored
Keegan Meyn on a double to left center.
Phillips hit his second home run on a solo shot to right field capping the 10-2 win.
The Governors registered 13 hits for the day, four of which were home runs.
Phillips went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two homers and five RBI, while Martinez finished at 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a pair of round-trippers and three RBI. Joslin also added two hits.
Brandon Vial picked up the win. Vial struck out five, walked three and allowed two runs on five hits in five innings.
Bergtholdt (2-3) suffered the loss. He allowed five runs on six hits and struck out two in one inning.
SEMO, which left 10 runners on base, had six hits with Wilber and
Trent Pobst getting two each.
The Redhawks return to action when they host Arkansas State Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., CT.
