CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (7-5) opens its Ohio Valley Conference slate Friday at 2 p.m. when it welcomes UT Martin (2-6) to the Redhawks Tennis Complex for Southeast's home opener.
SEMO has fashioned a 7-5 non-conference record in the dual season under head coach
Mary Beth Gunn who was a 2007 All-OVC tennis honoree with UTM.
Kseniya Zonova and
Romana Tarajova who have both earned OVC Female Athlete of the Week accolades in 2019 lead the Redhawks with seven singles wins each. Tarajova has a 7-2 mark at the top singles position.
Zonova, the no. 6 player in the 2019 OVC Women's Tennis Preseason Player Top 10, possesses a 7-4 record at the second singles slot.
Sinha Sneha is second on Southeast with a 6-3 singles mark and a 5-1 record at no. 6 singles.
Both Sneha and Tarajova enter OVC play riding five match win streaks.
On the doubles side,
Isabella Krupa and
Teona Velkoska pace the Redhawks with a 9-3 record at the middle (second) doubles position.
The first and third doubles teams of Sneha/Zonova and
Manuela Barriga/Tarajova each have 5-3 marks.
Southeast mostly recently swept Loyola New Orleans, 7-0, on March 12 over SEMO's spring break. Tarajova, Zonova, Krupa, Velkoska,
Anais Emelie and Sinha each had two wins (singles and doubles) in the final non-conference dual.
UT Martin enters the conference season with a 2-6 record. Overall, the Skyhawks have posted a 34-28 record in doubles play throughout the 2018-19 campaign.
Preseason OVC top-10 player Asel Jumamukhambetova leads the team with 13 singles victories, including a team-high three wins during the spring season while playing exclusively in the No. 1 slot.
Southeast continues its OVC schedule at home next weekend on March 29 and March 30 at the Redhawks Tennis Complex. The Redhawks host Tennessee State Friday, March 29 at 1 p.m. and then take on Belmont Saturday, March 30 at 11 a.m.
