EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.– Southeast Missouri (11-9, 2-4) had the tying run on base and the go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the ninth inning, but came up short in a 3-2 loss to SIU Edwardsville (7-10, 3-3) Sunday.
SIUE won the series, 2-1, and earned its second series victory in the all-time series between the two clubs.
SEMO pulled within a run in the sixth inning when
Tyler Wilber singled and came around to score on
Hunter Southerland's double to left center. With two outs,
Garrett Stephens tripled to right field and Southerland scored. Stephens tried to score on the play after the ball rolled to the wall, but was thrown out on a close play at the plate.
The Redhawk pitchers held SIUE scoreless for the final eight innings and escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh.
Stephens walked to start the ninth inning and gave way to pinch-runner
Trent Pobst. Pobst went to second on a one-out single by
Connor Basler and advanced to third when
Devon Wilson flied out to right. Braydon Bone forced
Danny Wright to ground out to first and pick up his second save of the season.
The Cougars scored all their runs in the bottom of the first inning. The first three hitters in SIUE's lineup singled before Raul Elguezabal knocked in the game's first run on a sacrifice fly. A two-out double by Justin Perkins plated two more runs to give SIUE a 3-0 lead.
Daniel Bergtholdt (2-2) gave up three runs on three hits and walked three in three innings. Bergtholdt also tossed two scoreless innings before exiting the game.
SEMO's bullpen did a tremendous job the rest of the way with
Austin Sachse and
Logan Winder teaming up to shutout the Cougars over the final five frames. Sachse added two strikeouts and Winder finished with four.
Ryan Byrd (1-1) was credited with his first win of the season in relief. Byrd struck out two, walked one, gave up two runs and scattered five hits in 5.2 innings.
Seven different Redhawks had a hit, including Basler, Wilson, Wright, Wilber, Southerland, Stephens and
Andrew Keck.
SIUE and SEMO each left 10 runners on base.
The Redhawks return to Cape Girardeau to open a five-game home stand against Memphis Tuesday.
