Wilber Records Two Hits in Loss to SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Shortstop Tyler Wilber had two hits as Southeast Missouri (10-7) fell to longstanding rival Southern Illinois (10-5), 4-1, Wednesday at Abe Martin Field.

Wilber had both of SEMO's hits and knocked in the Redhawks only run of the game. He posted his team-high ninth multiple-hit performance with a single in the first inning and base hit in the ninth.

SIU pitchers kept the Redhawks scoreless for eight innings until Wilber's RBI-single with two outs in the top of the ninth. Connor Basler led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Basler then scored on Wilber's ensuing hit to center.

The Salukis scored once in the third, twice in the fourth and tacked on another run in the eighth to build a 4-0 lead before SEMO broke up their shutout.

Back-to-back doubles led to the game's first run in the third. Grey Epps doubled down the left field line to score J.T. Weber to start the inning.

An inning later, the Salukis capitalized on two SEMO errors to score a pair of unearned runs. Will LaRue doubled, went to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ian Walters. On the next play, Alex Lyon reached on a two-base error. Lyon, after stealing third, came home on a sacrifice fly by Philip Archer to extend SIU's lead to 3-0.

LaRue walked and moved into scoring position when Walters singled to right in the bottom of the eighth. He later scored on a wild pitch for SIU's final run of the contest.

Wilber finished at 2-for-4 with a RBI, while the rest of SEMO's hitters went 0-for-25 at the plate.

Meanwhile, SIU posted six hits with Epps going 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Austin Sachse (1-2) took the loss on the mound for SEMO. Sachse worked five innings, allowing three runs on four hits.

Matthew Steidl (1-1) picked up his first win of the season. He struck out two, walked none and allowed one hit in three scoreless innings.

SEMO and SIU split their home-and-home series this year. The Redhawks came from behind to beat the Salukis, 11-9, in Cape Girardeau a week ago.

The Redhawks resume Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend when it heads to SIU Edwardsville for a three-game series beginning Friday. It marks just the second time SEMO goes on the road this season.
