Southeast Pitchers Record Career-High Strikeouts in Series Finale

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri (5-2) fell 5-2 to Western Illinois (2-4) Sunday in extra innings of work. Daniel Bergtholdt recorded a career-high six strikeouts in his start on the mound for Southeast.

Bergtholdt allowed just one run on four hits in six innings of work on the mound in the final game. He was releived by Logan Winder who would throw four innings and allow three runs and record a career-high four strikeouts.  

Western Michigan struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. A sacrifice bunt by Alex Dorethy scored Steve McShane who was walked earlier in the inning.

SEMO came back in the bottom of the fifth with lead off walk coming back to score. Peyton Faulkner was walked and scored on an error by WIU's second baseman who allowed the ball to roll through his legs on Brett Gonzalez at bat. Both Gonzalez and Faulkner were safe on the play to tie it up at 1-1. 

The Leathernecks regained the lead in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch. Kevin Raisbeck got a base hit into right field and was followed by a base hit to Logan Winder who was on the mound. The two base runners advanced to home on a wild pitch. Sears, who was earlier called safe on a base hit to Winder, was called out at home on a play by Logan Winder. WIU took a 2-1 on the play. 

In the bottom of the eighth Southeast tied the game back up with Devon Wilson scoring on a base hit by Alex Nielsen. Wilson was walked to start the inning, and was moved on an Austin Blazevic single to right field. Wilson slid into home with two outs to make the game even. 

Blazevic went 2-for-5 on the day with two singles. His first hit came in th bottom of the fourth, and was the first hit of the team. Southeast would finish with five hits, two of which were Blazevic's. 

The game remained tied 2-2 until the top of the eleventh, when WIU would record three hits and three runs to pull away from the Redhawks. WIU would start the inning with a base hit to right field and a walk. Next would be an error on Blazevic to load the bases for the Leathernecks.

CJ Schaeffer Jr. would hit a base hit to right field to score Bauer and give WIU a 3-2 lead. Raisbeck would hit a double over Gonzalez's head in right field to score two more and extend the lead to 5-2 in favor of Western Illinois. 

The Redhawks will head to #1 Vanderbilt Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m., CT first pitch.
