Thompson Reaches Game-High 28 Points and 13 Rebounds as Redhawks Fall Late to Murray State

MURRAY, Ky.Tesia Thompson had a game-high 28 points and 13 rebounds and Jocelyn Taylor added 17 points as Southeast Missouri (12-15, 7-9) fell to Murray State (12-15, 8-8), 82-74, Saturday at the CFSB Center.
 
MSU used a late 12-0 run to get by SEMO. The Redhawks went scoreless for over 2:41 and missed seven field goals during the time the Racers put together their decisive stretch.
 
Tied, 60-60, in the fourth quarter, SEMO built a seven-point lead. The Redhawks were 0-of-5 from 3-point range until Carrie Shephard buried a trey to extend SEMO's lead to 67-60 with 6:35 to go.
 
Immediately following a timeout, MSU scored 12-consecutive points in 2:29. Evelyn Adebayo drove in for a layup to grab the Racers a 72-67 lead with just under four minutes to play.
 
Thompson scored the next four points to get the Redhawks within one at 72-71, but Janika Griffith-Wallace made two free throws and buried a 3-pointer to make it a two-possession game (77-71) with 1:37 on the clock.
 
SEMO trailed, 15-7, with less than two minutes left in the first quarter when it scored 10 unanswered points to take a 17-15 edge after the opening period.
 
Thompson made a pair of free throws to tie the game and Shephard made a jumper to put the Redhawks ahead at the end of the quarter.
 
SEMO continued to play strong in the second period and stretched its 10-0 surge into an 18-2 jaunt. After Adebayo rebounded a Brianna Crane miss and scored, the Redhawks countered with an 8-0 run. Thompson scored seven of those points and widened SEMO's lead to 25-17 with her layup with 7:13 remaining.
 
The Redhawks increased their lead to 11 twice before heading into the intermission ahead, 38-31. SEMO led at the half for the third-straight contest.
 
SEMO made 7-of-12 field goals for a 58.3 percent clip in the second quarter and concluded the first half strong with makes on four of its last five attempts. Thompson led all scorers with 17 points and six rebounds in the first half.
 
MSU heated up to make eight of its first 10 field goals and scored 20 points in the first 6:31 of the third quarter. Giffith-Wallace buried a 3-pointer off a turnover and Adebayo knocked down a three giving the Racers a 46-45 lead on their next possession. MSU managed to score 23 third-quarter points, but Taylor split two defenders and scored a layup to put SEMO up, 58-54.
 
MSU, which outscored SEMO, 28-16, in the fourth quarter, was led by Adebayo and Griffith-Wallace who poured in 20 points each. The rest of the Racers starters joined them with double figures in the scoring column.
 
Thompson shot 9-of-18 from the field and 10-of-12 at the free throw line. Taylor was 7-of-16 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds.
 
Both teams combined to shoot 56 free throws in the game. SEMO hit 20-of-26 and MSU made 24-of-30.
 
The Redhawks, who played their final road game, return home to host Tennessee State on Feb. 28.
